Just wanted to say that I saw another cat die of a Hartz flea product reaction.

Unfortunately, the owner apparently didn't read the instructions. It didn't say it was for kittens and this little guy was only 6 weeks old and a little over a pound.

And he noticed it was ataxic **last night** and didn't bring it in until later in the afternoon today!!

Poor little thing.. his temp wouldn't even register on the thermometer.

I don't understand why these products are still on the market????????????

I just went to their website to contact them and under their contact information is this message: If you think your pet needs medical attention, please contact your vet immediately.

Doesn't that say something????

They are in the process of redoing their formula and also going on a Read the Label campaign. Many people DO NOT read the label- heck, half the labels out there, I can't even see to read! Sometimes these deaths occurred because of that fact- people grabbing dog product and using it on their cats and kittens-

none of the over the counter stuff works, most of the cats that come in with reactions are from over the couter products. why no just buy advantage and be done with it.

whats worse are the flea anemia cases. you see a puppy or kitten come in flat out with people saying "he/she was find yesterday" which is bs we all know it.

another thing we see alot are people puting advantix or other dog only products on thier cats. or using advantage then a flea shampoo then a flea dip. what a way to kill the thing...... people are annoying. thats why i work with animals

Well it was for cats. But adults or atleast cats that were older. This poor little thing only weighed a smidge over a pound. I don't know how much the owner used but it had to be quite a bit. We gave him a bath and rinsed him real well once and afterwards he still smelled very strongly of the flea stuff. So we had to give him another bath.

A Read the Label campaign is a wonderful idea. This is the second case like this I have seen in the past few months.

That's what kills me is because they don't want to pay $18 for flea control they pay $4 for it, and then spend $500 because their cat or dog almost dies. It's crazy how that works out.

Just like how they don't want to pay for the animal to have vaccines or to get it neutered. Then they can end up paying LOTS more money because it gets some sort of disease.. Lymes, Parvo, Leukemia, etc.. or the animal ends up getting a pyo or prostate problems.

Vaccinate and spay and neuter your animals!!!

I'm a receptionist at a veterinary clinic. I just had a woman call a few days ago and ask if it was safe to use Hartz flea shampoo on a 6 week old small breed puppy (Pekingese-Pug mix)? I told her no and that if she read the label on the bottle it should state this. She then says, "I was just wondering, but I already gave her a bath in it yesterday." Why did she even bother calling then? I was so annoyed with her. I told her that there's a reason that they put those warnings on the label. I then went on to tell her about all of the cats/kittens that have been hospitalized at our clinc recently after having reactions to Hartz products (with very large medical bills). I told her that we sold Revolution and Frontline (which are both much safer than Hartz). She said the puppy was infested with fleas and she was worried her house would become infested and that was the reason she used the flea shampoo without checking first. I told her not to use anymore Hartz products on it because none of their products are safe for a 6 week old animal. I told her the puppy should be seen anyways for its first exam and its first Distemper vaccine. I told her she could pick up a safe flea preventative then. She said, "oh, the puppy is acting fine and I don't really have the money for a vet visit right now." People just make me want to scream! Why get a puppy (I didn't ask, but it was probably an expensive pet store puppy) if you can't even provide basic preventative health care for it???

I was once a really stupid person and im sure glad that im smart now.
A friend at work gave me Hartz flea drops and recomended it. Well! I did read the box carefully and applied it. The next day I came home from work and found fur all over the place. She managed to rub off all the fur on the back of neck on a cardboard box! Sadly it was in the middle of night and I had no vet to call but i gave her a bath in plain warm water. It was awful! She had all these red blisters and sores all around her neck and down her back! Thankfully she was fine after the bath but it took forever for her fur to come back!
Now I tell everyone not to use these products and my co-worker, after hearing my story stopped using it as well. I feel so sad at work because i can see people buying them. Im always tempted to put a sign on the shelf warning customers but idont think my manager would like that.
