A controversial proposed bill to prohibit gays, lesbians and single people from using medical procedures to produce a child has been dropped by its legislative sponsor.

State Sen. Patricia Miller, R-Indianapolis, issued a one-sentence statement Wednesday saying: "The issue has become more complex than anticipated and will be withdrawn from consideration by the Health Finance Commission."
...
Under her proposal, couples who needed assistance to become pregnant -- such as through intrauterine insemination; the use of donor eggs, embryos and sperm; in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer; or other medical means -- would have had to be married to each other.

Thank goodness such a proposal was dropped. Cannot imagine the mindset of persons who were seeking to introduce such proposal.

My thoughts exactly!

good thing they dropped the bill. It was a clear example of discrimination against homosexual, single people and unmarried couples.

Personally, I would not have a child while single (simply as a matter of emotional / financial support) but that's my decision, not the government's.

And as far as homosexuals and unmarried couples, I see no reason why they should not be parents.

I had no idea that she was trying to do this until I read about her dropping it in the paper yesterday. I couldn't imagine that passing, even here in Indiana. She is getting a lot of flack for this. I can imagine so many scenerios, where even the most conservative people couldn't say no to a women wanted to get pregnant. I've known women my age with husbands serving overseas, who have had their husband's sperm frozen just in case he doesn't make it home. Can you imagine telling a widow she can't have her own fertilized eggs implanted?

THat actually happened to a woman in the UK after her husband died of cancer. She went to court and there was a long fight before she won. Now she has two children by her dead husband. But I am a bit unsure about it - in some ways, I think it would have been healthier if she had been able to move on.

I'm all for gay, lesbian and unmarried couples getting help but I don't really know how I feel about single people getting assistance to become pregnant - I don't think it should be banned but it seems a little selfish.

I agree thank goodness it was dropped.

If a couple or single person can afford to go the emotional, economical, and physical challenges this type of pregnancy involves, who am I to judge their relationship or reasons?

At least there would be no doubt these children would be very much wanted by their parent or parents.

Well, my personal belief is that married couples, meaning a man and women, are the best for raising children. However, that personal belief should not be law. Neither should my feeling that kids are best raised with a pet. Or that little girls shirts should cover their bellies, or that child molesters should be shot on the first offense. Well, that one might be a good law!

You cannot legislate morality, for the most part. And I would vote against that law!

Becky, I have to tell you how refreshing it is for me to see someone who feels the way you do but still recognizes how important it is NOT to legislate morality. I really applaud you for that .

Of course, y'all know where I'd stand on a bill like that!
