Hello All! My 5 year old neutered male orange cat Kobie is obsessed with going outside. I found Kobie after he had been hit by a car four years ago. I don't want him going outside, because he obviously doesn't know to stay out of the road. Also, I live in an area very unfriendly to roaming animals, especially cats. His safety is my first priority, but his happiness in a very close second. He isn't miserable inside. He plays with the other cats, sleeps on sofa, eats like a king, and has lots of attention from his human family too. But anytime ANYONE goes near that back door he is there like a flash ready to bolt outside.
We have fought this problem every since we have had him. The best solution seems to be, if we are going outside, Kobie gets a treat and spends some quality time in the dogs crate. We've tried pheromone sprays to keep him away from the door, we've tried keeping him in a separate room all of the time (but he doesn't get as much interaction that way). I am at my wits end. It wouldn't be such a problem except my mother is disabled and is always afraid she will fall trying to come in the door and watch for the cat.
I don't want to punish him because right now he comes back to me pretty readily, and I don't want to hurt him.

Any suggestions on how to keep him indoors and happy about it?

On a related question: He routinely tries to mount my spayed female cat. I have often wondered if he was not neutered properly and maybe that is why he still has this urge to roam. Does anyone know how I can find out?

My Sophie is over a year old and has been indoors from the age of 6 weeks but still comes trotting towards the door if i go to open it.

What i do really if i have to open the door is to put them in their room which is the guest room until it's ok to let them out.

Your doing the right thing by keeping him inside, especially if their animal unfriendly where you live

BTW i know you say you havent punished him, but if you did it would only turn him against you

Is he frightened by loud noises? You can put a can of coins or buttons by the door and rattle when he comes running. That might scare him back.

I just don't think he'll ever stop wanting to get out. My cats do this constantly also (we take them out on a leash) every time we go near the door or come home. We've come to expect them to make a dash for it, and are always prepared to stop them, but you're right it is a pain, especially for your disabled mom.
You know you're right by keeping him inside though.

Did you take the cat to have him neutered since you found him. I would get the vet to check that out to see if he really is neutered. I don't know how to break him of wanting out. I never had that problem when my cats were inside cats.

You've had him a year....maybe (just maybe) he'll outgrow it.

We made our 10 y/o cat an indoor only cat after 10 years of outside bliss.
She eventually got over it....but took a long long long time.

Do you have an outdoor enclosure? That may help some if you build one or have one.

My only boy kitty is constantly trying to devise plans of escape. He once hid himself between my four dogs waiting at the door and when I opened it a flash of orange went right out with them. Sneaky little butt.

It's a good idea to have him checked to make sure he is neutered...but as one of my friends said "you can take away the plumbing, but not the desire".
