Shooting stray cats!

I was talking to my sister on the phone earlier, she lives in West Virginia and she was telling me she had to get special color collars for her 2 cats because there will be a stray cat shoot in her area!

I told her she shouldn't even let them outside.
Do you think a person heartless enough to shoot a poor stray kitty is going to take the time to see if a cat is wearing a collar or not before they pull the trigger?!

There are so many other options (as I know everyone here is aware of) it just really makes me angry that people can be so heartless and cruel!

The cold hearted mentality of the majority of Americans when it comes to animals is very disheartening. Just because the poor strays don't have homes doesn't mean they deserve to be murdered in cold blood. My next protest letter is going to the Governor of West Virginia. I hope other people reading this will take a few minutes and write too.

Like Stormy said, the kind of people that would volunteer to shoot cats won't bother to check the collars. They will shoot all cats and pretend the non-stray victims of their legalized murder spree were accidental.

Geeez, doesn't West Virginia have a bad enough reputation already? Don't get me wrong, it's a beautiful state, I love driving through there, but it's "events" like this cat shoot that make the rest of the nation look down their noses in disgust at the people of W.Va.
Who thinks of doing stuff like that anyway??!

I have heard of this law somewhere before, and I can't believe how this law was passed. To kill any stray cat just to help the population is outrageous, this also teaches kids that cats are a nuisance, therefore should be rid off. and what if it were one of my cats who somehow got out of my house? they are indoors but chipped no collars. no one would know, but why would the shooter care?

Sarajevo City Council also culls strays every few years by shooting, when the population gets too big to handle. There are no cat shelters or rescue organisations here. And the few people who have cats or who feed the street cats do not believe in neutering, so the problem recurs. I have brought a trap back from France and I am going to start a TNR in my neighbourhood at least, but everyone thinks I am mad.

They do that just North of here too in the reserves but with dogs..they call it "dog days" if you own a dog you keep it inside, if not they shoot it. Makes me so angry!

When my parents lived here, they lived right outside the city limits. She called a couple times about all the stray cats (some on their street kept letting her cats have kittens and then letting them run around) and dogs, and they told her they can't come out there and to just shoot them if they're on her property.

Man, I won't even try to convey my rage when it comes to hunting, not just stray cats, but in general.
I was so happy when they defeated the stray cat hunting bill in WI. Why can't West Virginia follow that example??

Please tell me I'm just dreaming and this post isn't real.

Talk about wanting to beat the living c**p out of anyone who would EVER think for a second this is okay. I seriously am typing so hard on my laptop right now... OMG! I am SOOOOOOOO outraged right now!

What does this teach children?!?!? I want to be face to face with whoever passed this 'law'. If any of my cats ever did get out.. I'll tell you this much - the person shooting my cat- if I know who it is.. you may as well throw me in jail now because I'll ... oh - I won't even say.

Who is responsible for passing this 'law' ??? I want names.. if anyone can help.

Please try to get a few more details on this cat shoot, please, so that I (and hopefully lots of other TCSrs) can write to the West Virginia tourism commissions and explain that I won't be using their state's travel guides until this practice is banned statewide.... Also, let's spread the word.....

How awful and what a tragedy... What part of WV does your sister live in???? I lived in WV for 26 years and have never heard of such a thing.
