I have been using peoplepc as my dial up provider for many yrs. They do have a service for an extra fee that is supposed to be "faster" (right now average is 38.6 kbs). I saw an ad on TV I think Verizon has a "faster" dial up service too.
Is anyone familiar with this or uses this type of service.
We don't have cable TV even though the service is available where I live (long story but cable rep made BAD impression).
We are NOT getting a satellite dish either. So this is my only option.
Any reviews or comments would be greatly appreciated!!

I used to have AOl dialup. It was ok because I had no idea what the difference was. Then they offered a "faster' dialup service for just a few bucks more. I fell for it and there was no difference. I later tried Verizon DSL. I think it's not a whole lot more than the AOL but I was stunned at the difference in speed. I understand that the cable is even faster but I can't afford the rates.

I have DSL. You might check to see if that option is available. It may not be that much more than accelerated dial up. Once you've had High Speed internet, you won't want to go back to dial up of any form. I used to have Cable, and I really didn't see that much difference between DSL and Cable. They're both fast.

I have SBC Global DSL, and it's only $29 a month. I remember having dial up for $21, so if I were you, I would really look into DSL service.

From what I understand, the "accellerated" dial up just automatically makes all images show up at a low resolution, thus decreasing the download time for the page. But it depends on the website and how it's coded whether or not their script to "accellerate" it will work or not.

That is my understanding as well. It doesn't sound too great to me.

I use SBC Global DSL. Find out if DSL if available in your area through your phone line.

I used to have Peoplepc...and went to their accellerated option for more $ and could NOT tell any difference.
We have high speed Charter now....but when Version DSL comes this way that`s what we are going to go with...I`m hearing really good repots about them from a number of people we know!

I can't say for sure, but I think that the 'accelerated' dialup has better cashing and possibly reduces the image resolution. It's not really faster, it's just somewhat lower quality.

After going to cable internet, I can't ever go back. Sure, I may wish that Comcast would burn in hell, because as a company, they're awful. I just don't have another option besides dialup in this area.

Even with the hassle, awful cusomer service, and horrible response times, I'd pick Comcast over dialup any day.

Too bad the accelerated dial up doesn't sound good - I was curious about it too.

If I could find a DSL service for a reasonable price that doesn't require a subscription to cable TV, I'd probably go for it - our current average dial-up speed is a lightning-fast 16.8 Kbps
But then it's only about $12 a month.

I don't want cable TV, so I don't want to have to pay for it as part of a "deal" to get DSL.

we dont subscribe to cable tv but we have cable internet-- 50 bucks a month but its WAYYYY better than dialup anyday. As a perk though ( and i know this is illegal, and the cable guy set it up without even asking us) you can put a splitter on the cable coming into your hosue and then put it on the modem and a tv and you can get at least basics.

Disclaimer: we didnt know about this until we went to hook up directv on our tv in the bedroom where our cable modem is and found that the cable guy had already hooked us into the cable-- we called the cable company and they said that it was fine with them if the cable guy did that. our bill never changed in price-- and our cable never goes down except in storms otherwise i love it.
