Every cat I have ever had, or know are frighted of the vaccum cleaner. My new cat Buddy who is 6 months has absolutly no fear of the vaccum. I can literally push the vaccum into him and he won't move
Sometimes he might even chase me around while I vaccum. Once I even rented the rug doctor carpet cleaner, which is extremly loud, and he just attacked it. I think it is so cute, my cats I had while I was younger ran and hide the minute I pulled out the vaccum, and my sisters cats also run and hide. I was wondering how everyones furbies react to the vaccum cleaner. Does yours run and hide or have no fear. Just Curious.

Hey there...
My Kareem hates the vacuum. Once its out, he hides until he is sure that it is gone. I have heard of dogs chasing the vacuum, but never cats. Sounds cute though...I think its a good thing!!

i think my cat is getting immune to loud scary noises, between the gardeners outside my window or vaccuum outside my door, he doesnt get scared of it, at first he was just curious and looked towards direction, now he just ignores it.

When I first brought Harley home, he was absolutely terrified of it (well that and my hair dryer, the dishwasher...anything that makes noise) but now when he sees me bringing it out he kinda just sits at a distance, he doesn't run away from it anymore like he used to, but he just usually goes and sits in the window and watches outside til I'm done cleaning, I'm so glad I don't have to worry about freaking him out so much anymore! He used to shake and be scared of everything for a good hour or so after I would vacuum! Another kitty stage done and over with!

Chester seems to have no fear whatsoever, so he usually chases the vaccume, or lies right infront of the spot you're working on. We have a central vac, so sometimes he likes to sit near the wall connection and chase stuff through the hose.

To Oliver its a minor annoyance.

To Tripod, it is a terrible monster. He runs under the bed when the broom comes out for fear that the vacuum is next.

Spike is convinced the vacuum is an enemy and that it's after me; when I take it out to clean, he immediately attacks it and follows it from room to room. The loud noise doesn't bother him in the slightest. His brother Oz, OTOH, hates the vacuum with a passion ... it interferes with his snooze-time. Which, you know, is ALL the time!

Bijou and Mika keep a safe distance from the upright vacuum but are not overly frightened.

On the other hand Bijou loves to be vacuumed with the central vac. I was trying to do the bathroom last weekend and he kept laying and rolling on the small area rug until I vacuumed him. He loves it!

I had one cat that wasn't afraid of a central vac I had. I could even run it over him. I had upright vacs with all my other cats and all those cats were afraid of them.

None of our bengals are afraid of the vacuum cleaner. They don't run over to play with it when it's on, but they make no efforts to flee either.

We just get the "must you make all that racket?" look from some of them, and the others are mildly interested in the fact that the power cord keeps moving around (inexplicably to them).

my girl Nell was terrified of any loud noise when i got her. now if i know something is gonna make a loud noise, i tell her in "big noise" several times so that she does not startle when i turn the vacuum on, or use the printer on the PC (which is not that loud, but she thinks so)

when i am vacuuming, i tell her "its ok" several times in a soothing voice, and now as long as i do not get too close to her she just watches

the last time we had fireworks, i told her just before they were to start "big noise" and when they started, i said a few times, "its ok" and she was fine, she did not hide or anything!

if you use the same basic words and tone of voice, you can really do a lot to calm your cats down.
i dont know if i have trained them or they have trained me

but it nice to be able to say a few words so that they do not freak out when something unexpected happens (OK, OK i do not vacuum nearly often enough
)

my old girl was raised in a home where the owner vacuumed daily, and she is not at all afraid of the vacuum, in fact, sometimes i have to move her out of the way!!

My boys are so afraid of the central vaccuum that all I need to do is bring the hose out and they tear off upstairs (or downstairs, as the case may be) and hide like they'd seen a coyote! Sheba keeps her distance or leaves, but not as though she thinks it is a predator.

Marlee is weird! Like someone else already said, she seems immune to loud noises as well! I mean, she doesn't like the vacuum, but as long as I don't go charging at her or something, she just watches me with big eyes. Whats so funny, if there is a really loud noise (vaccum, something falls/is dropped, garbage truck, etc.) she doesnt even flinch. But if there is a little bang on a TV show, or a neigbors door slams, she jumps! Make sense? Not to me!
