My Peter, 5 yr old neutered male, will sit contentedly and drool sometimes when being petted; sometimes without. He'll even stick his tongue out a bit occassionally.

Is this part of their smurgling behavior or just drooling or something else?

My Mom's cat drools excessively when he is being pet and cuddled. He only started when he reached 7 yrs, but nothing physically is wrong with him. As for smurgaling, Im not even too sure what that is?!?

The following is copied from "Is smurgling a bad sign?", an earlier post that was very interesting.

"What is Smurgling??
Smurgling is the ultimate display of kitty affection and love.
Smurgling involves three aspects of kitty behavior:
kneading
nuzzling
salivating

Do all Kittys smurgle??
No, not all kittys smurgle. Some cats are diehard smurglers. Others could care less. Most Siamese are smurgglers.

Are there degrees of smurgling?
Yes!
The following "Cat Codes" describe smurgling levels displayed by cats.
S = "I wouldn't be caught doing it!"
S+ = "I sneak an occasional smurgle."
S++ = "When I'm in the mood, I can smurgle with the best of them."
S+++ = "Everybody leaves my house moistened with kitty-drool."

But I am not sure if what Pete or your Mom's cat does is a part of this particular behavior. Can drooling be a sign of something else?
