They said the chest being compressed like that up's the chance of pneumonia. And since I already have bronchitis... that wouldnt be good.
Ooooooh
that's even worse! I'd imagine that taping them would at least immobilize them so it wouldn't hurt quite as much! Well, since you can't immobilize the rib, you're going to have to immobilize yourself. You might seriously consider Howard's advice if at all practical of taking a quarter off.

Sympathies

I have actually seen patients bruise or break ribs from coughing - is that what they or you think occured? I hope you feel better soon. I once broke some ribs in a car accident (a silly thing but it was very sore so I know how you feel!!). I also wish you luck in your bid to stop smoking - you WILL feel so much better in the long term!! Good

Years ago, I broke 4 ribs, when I landed on a water ski that fell off of my foot when I went over a jump.
After x-rays, I was taped up & told not to laugh because it would hurt like crazy.
Of course, after being told not to laugh, everything struck me as hilarious.

After a few days & some mighty painful laughs, the pain eased & my life got back to normal. Well...normal for me.

I'd send a hug but I thought that might not be such a good idea right now so instead ...
here are some healing sun rays for you.

My coughing fits are just one major cough right after another till it chokes me, then i breathe in and it starts all over. It lasts about 15 minutes or so and it happens 2-4 times a day for almost 2 weeks now. So both the doctors and I are plenty sure that is what caused it.

Thanks for the well wishes everyone!

the 1st time i quite smoking, it was because of a severe URI - i just couldn't breathe period, & the smoking made it even harder. i think cold turkey is the only way to go. sorry to hear about your rib - i had a friend who broke one the same way!
getting better!

Well, I still dont know if I am convinced...

Actually I am very convinced. When I first came into the ER, my O2Sat was bouncing around 90%, which it should be well above 95%. Any lower and I fear they would have had me on a respirator. After my x-rays showed no collapsed lung, he came back and talked to me and said there is no way I am gunna kick this unless I quit smoking.
Anyone who smokes knows it is harder to breathe sometimes when you are doing things. But I didnt realize it could lower your oxygen saturation level so much.

I havent had one cig. today and I am doing great! I am coughing less today, and I am actually kinda in a good mood, besides the occasional dirty look when someone bumps into me.

Whew! Your O2Sat is usually around 99% lol Just keep thinking about that whenever you want another cigarette! The boys and I are cheering you on!

I'm so sorry you've been so ill, Meagan.
I've had broken ribs a couple of times and know just how very painful it is! It's impossible to move any part of your body without causing jolts of horrible pain.
Keep a pillow nearby, and when you begin to cough, hold it to your ribs and brace against it. That won't take away all the pain by far, but it will help. I hope your Dr. prescribed an effective cough medicine for you.

Congratulations on your entire day without a cigarette!

Thank you! I am so proud of myself!!

I am now on 5 medications. She prescribed me(a week ago) Tessalon perles, which from my understanding, works with your CNS to numb your coughing reflex. Plus I am on Tequin(antibiotic) and Duratuss(sp?) to help break stuff up. An Albuterol Inhaler to help keep my airway open, and I got the Lortab for pain yesterday, and he extended my Tequin prescripton.
The tessalon and albuterol she gave me to try and minimize the amount of spasms I have, which I dont think is working. I still have as many as I had before.
I am worrying though that I am not getting any better. I am afraid that everything I am on is just supressing everything and not healing anything. As soon as I quit taking everything I fear everything will come back. The only reason I say this, is because when it gets time for my pills I know, because I start coughing more.

You've only been on this antibiotic for a short time, Meagan. Please don't be worried, you must give your body time to heal. Please get plenty of rest and of course drink plenty of water! You'll feel better in no time at all! Snuggles from my girls to you!

Well, you sounds like you'r eon the right tracks. My boyfriend has FINALLY totally kicked the smoking habit and he's just passed the 3-month-mark. There is such a HUGE difference in him... he's gotten so much more energy (good news for me!
) he's happier, he's eating better, he's started running again and playing 18 holes of golf is suddenly really easy. It's wonderful - and you'll feel soooooo good now that you're going to kick the habit too.

Stick with it beb, you've only been on the meds a day or two, they've got to have a chance to kick in properly. You'll get better over time - bronchitis has a reputatiion for taking a good while to clear up properly and it can also leave you with a post-viral cough. My mother had bronchitis last year in March and it left her with a cough that lasted until May this year - that cough only cleared up and went after she started to take ecchinacia tablets - but it did clear up quickly.

The best thing you can do is take it easy and you'll get better
Careful with that rib now eh?

Get well!

I agree with Ryn on the cigarette part.

And I hate to hear you broke a rib.
I had a bruised one years ago and it hurt like hell.
I can't imagine the pain you must be feeling.
I hope the Lortab are helping!!

Get better soon!
