I have a 6 month old male kitten who is going in to be neutered Wednesday. I was wondering what anyone might know about the "test" you can have done to see if the cat will be able to stand the anesthesia? I think it's about $50. My cats have mostly come pre-neutered, so I've only run up against this one other time. Does anyone know if this is a useful test? Thanks!

The test is very useful since it shows how well his organs are functioning. It is essential for elective surgery in older animals. For a 6 month old, I would consider it a personal choice. There is always a risk that he could have something going on that the test would reveal, but the odds are pretty minimal. So it's your decision if you want to spend the $50 and know for sure or trust the odds and keep the money in the bank.

a) many birma cats are sensitive to anesthezia. If he not birma - the risks are lesser.

b) the anesthezia on males is not at all so deep as needed for female neutering.

c) he is young and othervise healthy I believe?

So I second semiferals words.

You decide.

Im not a vet.

Thanks! I was under some impression from a personal friend that the test was to see if they were "allergic" to the anethestic, but that's not what I had originally thought it was for, so that's the reason for the confusion. Organ function panel makes more sense to me. (P.S. he's just a mutt kitty - the one on my sig. And he's healthy & young.) I have a couple days to mull it over.

Smudge may be a mutt kitty, but certainly a beautiful kitty.

I'm betting all will go well.

Aw, thanks! I am going to have to get a photo of Smudge in the "meatloaf" position. His face looks just like Bijou and Mika's sissy, Tia. You would swear he's just her albino brother!

Funny you should say that. My husband thinks Tia looks more like Bijou than Mika. I guess I thought she looked like Mika because she is tiny like Mika.

I'll be waiting to see pictures of Smudge. I have a definite softspot for him.

A pre-screen looks at your cats liver and kidney functions. If their liver or kidneys [[which filter the anesthetic]] aren't working properly, your cat could die under certain anesthetics. In our neuter/spays we include the pre-screen. I would say it is worth it, paying $50 rather than having a dead cat. If this were just a $10 neuter I'd say who cares, but I would spend the extra cash.

We actually have two pomeranians who came in for prophys. The 12 year old's liver and kidney functions were fine, the 2 year old's were high. Don't let age fool you.

We do PreGA bloods if a cat or dog are over 8 or have had problems with anesthetic in the past.
The reality of it is that a desexing for a male cat takes about 5 mins from start to finish so really it's a personal choice.
We also use Isoflurane insted of Halathane so it's a bit safer.
