Hi! Before my "Smokey" cat was aloud home from the RSPCA he was desexed (3months of age), my question is?

Now at 13 months of age, he has decided that he can mate. He is always chasing my 3 year old desexed female cat "Misty" around and often holds her neck and mounts her. I dont know if he can actually mate ( I know he can not impregnate her) but he is really annoying Misty . I separate them each time and he is not aggressive when he stop's. He is fit, healthy and a very happy playfully cat, does anyone know why he would be doing this. Thanks. Debbie

I know with dogs it's a sign of asserting dominance rather than trying to mate. Is this true of cats as well maybe?

It's not actually a mating behavior, but a dominance display.
It's pretty normal.
He's tell her in no uncertain term that he is the alpha cat and that she is an underling.
Dominant males (even females) will practice mounting displaying on all other cats they see as submissive.
Unless he is hurting her, I would simply allow him to assert himself to avoid further (sometimes serious) dominance displays later.

I have a dominant male here that does it at least a couple times a month.
It seems to keep order amongst my 6 cats, and no one gets injured by it.

Are you sure they are not just playing....and or setting territory boundries (as in him trying to establish that he is the alpha cat?) I mean is he just grabbing and holding and getting his body on top of hers...or is he actually "HUMPING"???
Our 2 cats are both fixed males...but Toby did that to Tedy all the time when Tedy first moved in (Toby is the alpha about most of their cat issues)...In fact he still does it sometimes. He`ll grab Tedy by the back of the neck (or sometimes under his neck) and then spread his whole body over the top of Tedy`s body. This only lasts a few seconds, and he does`nt make any humping motions. Tedy just acts like "no big deal" and then they resume playing.
Or are my cats "GAY"????

Yes Smokey does all the actions and If I didn't stop him he will go for a little while. I didn't think about him trying to be the top cat. Misty doesn't get to resentfully so maybe that is it.

Also in cats this may be dominance. And it may too be sex behaviour. It is a little unusual for males neutered as early to know how and what to do yes, but it is not at all unusual for neutered males to try.
But sometimes they dont know how to do it, but, it was something with biting yes.
Let us bite her!

If she dont defences herself although annoyed*, I guess it is dominance not sexual behavior - expecielly as him cut as small kitten.

Help her, but show him he is the cat nr 1. For example when petting - always him first.
This is what I would try.

*A grown up female can almost always defence successfully against a male if he too eager if she doesnt want. It is he who must wait and court her.

Some very aggressive males of course dont court but takes what they want (yes these are real rapists
) , but this is plain to see...

Smokey seems to have much of russian blue in him - so he should be a well-behaved male - our own two RB SIREs were...

We dont know if Smokey has any RB in his blood line as he was dumped in the night cages at the RSPCA. So he has no history of who his Mother our father was. Still we love him to bits and thank that I went to the RSPCA to find a new family member. Debbie

I had an orange tabby who did this all the time. He was clearly the dominant cat and this seemed to be his way. The only one it seemed to annoy was me, so I tried to ignore it. But he never did stop! I've learned male cats have some real idiosynchrosize
and they are almost impossible to change.I guess we have to Accept them or get females

Under a stack of blueberry waffles.
Mine does it constantly (at least ten times a day) whenever he smellls a cat in heat outside. My spayed girl hates it, and fights him when he tries to rape her, but sometimes he succeeds (he is twice her weight and size), and i end up having to bathe her to get her leg fur unstuck. Sometimes i wonder if he has a brain abnormality which makes him so aggressive.

I think it is most likely dominant behavior. I had a 23 lb grey tiger who used to try to mount our pugs! And it was just dominant behavior. However, it is pretty entertaining to see a cat mounting a dog! LOL

I agree. I've seen this with rabbits as well (surprised?
) and even with same sexes.
