Greetings everyone,

my girlfriend recently moved into an apartment with her cat, Captain. She just moved him in yesturday and today, he's been acting lethargic. She has a problem with spiders and so she sprayed some spider poison in the corners around the carpet. We're not sure if he got into it or not, but as of today, he's been acting very strange. This morning, he burrowed himself under her comforters and hasn't moved all day. He used to love going outside, but we can't get him to go out on the balcony and look around. He just wants to go back and hide under the covers. While we were petting him and trying to figure out what is wrong with him, I noticed his breathing was a little heavy, and my girlfriend noticed his nose was cold. We're not sure if this is normal or not. We're currently trying to determine whether or not he may be sick, poisoned or merely in a depressed state from moving from his house with a big backyard he could play in. Also, he's moving away from his friend, Rollie, the Yorkie Terrier.

Does anyone have any advice for us? Any would be much appreciated. Thank you!

I would say to be on the safe side, either call the poison control number on the back of the spray bottle, or the ASPCA poison control number and list the symptoms of the cat. Moving is traumatic enough- you might tell your girlfriend that cats make great spider killers and sprays aren't necessary for spiders if you have a cat. Mine always alert me to when there is a spider in the house and unless I am quick about it, they make short work of any spider that dares to venture within.

Well, Captain is a little different on the spider subject. He's rather fat, lazy and oblivious. He tends not to take notice of the spiders, or go after them when he does see them. He's kind of a bum...

We're going to head back to her place now and give a call to poison control. Thanks for the info.

Good luck with him! He sounds like he might have gotten into the poison. I hope everything is okay. He is a really special cat too because male Calico cats are very very rare. I don't think i have EVER seen one and I worked in cat rescue. Let us know what the vet says.

Well I got home, read the back of the poison bottle and it said it was only poisonous in that it can cause eye irritation to pets or animals. It also said when the poision is dried it's safe for pets, and the poison had been dried for a day and a half before Captain came over. His eyes were fine, and he was fine when we got home so i didnt call the vet. He's fine today, I think he was just depressed that he hadn't been outside (which he loves) for a couple days. He throws tantrums whenever he doesn't get outside...so I'm going to let him out when I get home.

too bad he likes being outside so much because there are so many dangers and poisons he can get into out there on his own. Whether it is chemicals, garbage or toxic plants, there are so many risks. It is hard to keep them in though once they taste the outdoors.

(is he neutered??)

If you can eliminate the poison as a cause for the lack of regular "Capatin antics", it could be that Captain is not used to the new place yet and it will take a few days. That's normal--it's a new atmosphere and they have to explore it on their own terms.

Poor Captain just wants outside! LOL!
