Hello,

I am really glad to have found this site. This is going to be a long post sorry. I am mom to 10 kitties, 3 dogs, 5 sheep, 3 lambs, 7 goats and 13 layers, 7 bantams, and 48 broilers(soon to be in our freezer). We live on a farm in North Central Alberta. I have been married for 9.5 years and we have 5 children, 3 boys - almost 8, almost 5, and 13 months, and 2 girls - 6.5 and almost 3. I am an avid cat person. We only have 1 specifically designated outside cat, Dinosaur. We have had him for 5 years he is really fat. Most people can't believe that he is an outside cat. He fights with some of the other cats, we bring him in if it is really cold for brief periods or if coyotes are around.

Our other cats are

Fizz (short for Fizzgig) - she is a calico domestic shorthair. I have had her for 14 years. We are probably going to have to put her down soon. She has some problems that are finally catching up to her. I have been putting it off for a while. I figure as long as she wants cuddles, I will keep her around. Unless she is suffering.

Quirk - Grey tabby DSH. I have had her for 12 years. She gets frequent UTI's and likes to spray to mark her territory. She sleeps with my youngest daughter every night. She is a one pet purr starter. She has really loud purr.

Mama - Orange Tabby DSH. We have had her for over 8 years but she is over 10. She was a farm kitty that we got at a garage sale. The people were moving and were just going to leave the cats there. She was pregnant and had her babies a week after we got her. She is an awesome mouser. She sleeps with my middle son.

Cabot - Cream Tabby DSH. He is one of Mama's babies. He is just over 8 and he is a big boy. He is a big suck.... He likes to mark his territory as well. His girlfriend is Pumpkin (or so she thinks). He sleeps all over.

Pumpkin - Tortie with white bib, DLH. We have had her for just over 2 years and she was a rescue cat. She is about 4 years old or older. She is a snob, but she loves the kids and me. She sleeps with my oldest daughter every night.

T2 - She is a tortie DSH. She showed up here just over 2 years ago. She was a kitten then. She is a total snob to the other cats except for Pumpkin. She sleeps with my oldest son every night. She is an awesome little girl. She has a recurring problem with ear mites though. A really bad problem. We are trying a new medication right now. Hopefully it works.

Smokey - He is grey with a white bib DLH. He is a very beautiful cat. He is also a very big suck..... He showed up here last November. He is about 2 years old now. He always wants to go outside at around 6 in the morning. I try to not let him out until the sun is up, fear of critters getting him. Some mornings he is most persistent. He sleeps with us pretty much every night.

Ripley - He is a cream and white tabby DSH. He showed up here a month after Smokey. I think he is about 4 or so. He was already neutered so he had belonged to someone. I think people know I like cats and that they drop them off here. He is a big suck.... He sleeps with us every night or he will pop into my youngest sons crib. We take him out when we catch him. He is pretty good with my baby. But he has a flea problem. We have tried several different treatments. Any information would be great.

Gratis - He is a white and brown tabby DSH. He just showed up in August. We think he is only about 1 year old. That is what the vets confirmed when we got him fixed. We were trying to find a home for him but he will probably stay. He looks like he might have a bit or Oriental short hair in him. Maybe some Siamese or something. He is kept for the most part in our big bathroom when he is in the house. He can go into the ensuite and our bedroom, occasionally. He was intact when he showed up, I think he was trying to get lucky with this feral cat that eats here. He was severely emaciated, so I dewormed him and fed him up. We got him neutered a week later. Poor guy, he came here to try and get a piece, but instead he got his knackers chopped off.

We have 2 strays that show up, but they are not tame. If I can get a hold of them I will get them fixed. I really don't want babies running around here. I would be just heartbroken if I lost any.

Yes we let our cats out. It is impossible to keep them in the house. They are all good mousers as well. They don't kill too many birds which I am glad of.

I should go though. It snowed here last night..... yeah!!!! not. I still have some trees to plant before winter.

I am really glad to have found this site.

Shannon

Welcome to TCS! You have quite a fur family, there, and it sounds like each has his/her own distinct purrsonality. I think it's sweet that each kitty also has/her own sleeping comapanion of choice!

I'm so glad you found us and can't wait to hear more stories (and maybe see pictures?) of your family!

But he has a flea problem. We have tried several different treatments. Any information would be great.
I think there are variety of treatments that work well - Frontline, Advantage. Revolution. Do not use Hartz!

You should be able to go to the Health and Nutrition forum and search it. There is a button/bar in the top third of the page that should say "Search This Forum" and type in flea; fleas; flea treatment

We currently have them on Revolution right now. We did all of our critters on Sept. 19. But it doesnâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t seem to work that great. We had tried it before with T2's ear mites. We did it 3 months in a row but it never got rid of them within a week she was always scratching her ears again. The fleas I know that they have brought them in from outside and now that it is getting colder they should die outside. I am worried about the eggs that might be in the house. I have vacuumed and bleached the floors, but I can't get all of the nooks and crannies. I wanted revolution because it is supposed to harm the eggs. I know that we will have to do another treatment but should it kill fleas pretty quick? I can see my cats scratching and I groom them to try and find the fleas but that is pretty hard.

I learned the hard way about the Hartz one spot. Mama had a reaction to the medication and it looked like a chemical burn on the back of her neck. She lost all of the fur there. The vet said it was an allergic reaction. I was quite worried because she started to twitch 2 days after we gave it to her. I thought that she might end up with neurological damage. I phoned the vet and he said to give her a bath to wash the stuff off. (That went over so well. LOL)

She is doing better, but still has the bare patch I am worried that the hair won't grow back.

Thanks,

Shannon
