He may have swallowed some string, and it's on it's way out. I'm not sure if you should pull it and risk tearing some of his intenstines. For the time being keep him from trying to take it out himself, until you can reach a vet.

DO NOT pull on it

you do not know how much is still inside him and you could seriously damage him internally if you try to pull it out.

call your vet immediately and ask for instructions, please!! hopefully he will pass it on his own, but this can be a very serious situation and you need your vets advice!!

good luck!

Thank you for the advice. There was some stool on the floor by his litterbox, so that's how I noticed it. He must have had a BM and didn't get the yarn all the way out. I have been watching him like a hawk since I saw it, and the weird thing is..it's not there anymore. He hasn't gone to the bathroom since I noticed it, so I don't know where the yarn could have gone. It's not lying around the house anywhere, so I am really confused!

Are ;you sure what you saw was string? Could it have been a tapeworm?

You can give the string a *very* gentle pull and see if it comes out. If you feel any resistance at all, though, stop!

Keep an eye on your cat to make sure he is eating and does not have any vomiting. If the string is near his anus he should poop the rest of it out soon enough. But if he has any symptoms that indicate that his stomach is upset, go to the emergency vet right away.

Thank you all for responding. I wanted to give everyone an update. I did call the vet, and she told me to pull it out. That made me nervous, because I have always been told NOT to pull on a string. So, I called and got a second opinion, and I was told the same thing.

I don't know what to do. He hasn't had a bowel movement since yesterday morning, and it's almost 8 here. I don't know if that's normal or not, even though I should know how often my cats go.

I'm pretty sure it's not a worm, because it does not look like one. I have two neutered/spayed cats and they are indoor cats, they have never had fleas, and have been pretty healthy so far. I don't have any other animals besides my two babies.

He is acting normal; eating, drinking, playing and very loving. It doesn't seem to be bothering him, and he in not licking at it. I did cut it very carefully so that he wouldn't hurt himself by trying to pull it out.

I am scared to try and pull on it. I think I may wait until later tongith to see if he has a BM

oh gosh! i don't think i could pull on a string coming out of Juicy's butt
. It all sounds funny to me!

It does makes sense, though, that there would be a possibility of internal damage if the other end of the string were still inside and not to pull on it just in case.

I would take the cat in and let them have a look. Please keep us updated!!!

Don't be scared to pull on it....gently that is....My sis had to do it a few times for her dog because he would eat anything that he found, and he ate some strings and what not, shoe laces...so they would be sticking out of his bum, and she had to give him a little "help"
If he is eating and drinking and acting all normal I wouldn't worry...see if it comes out with the next BM if not don't be shy to give him a little help

I agree with some of the others. Just pull on it gently. If you feel any resistance then stop. You want to make sure it isn't wrapped around a vital organ or something. If you meet resistance when pulling gently then call the vet back and tell them about it.

I wanted to give another update. He still has not had a BM, but the string is gone now
I have no idea what happened to it, but it's not there. I even had my husband look, because I had cut it really short. He must have pulled it out by himself. It was short, but long enough so I could still see a little bit of it. I don't see it anywhere around the house, so I hope he didn't swallow it again!

I am still keeping a close eye on him as far as his behavior, eating, and bathroom activity go

This used to happen to my dog when she was a pup.... she had a few of those rope bones and she would eat some of the pieces and poor thing would walk around the yard squatting cuz her poo was stuck hanging from her bum! My dad would throw on a pair of garden gloves and gently help her out.... she looked so embarrassed! But definitely be gentle if you are gonna give a tug.... good luck - hope he poos soon!

Thank you for hearing everyones words so cautiously. It is a scary thing. be firm in the idea that you are doing the right thing by asking so many questions.

I would also recommend gently and i mean gently pulling on the "string' and as others have said, if you feel any resistance at all. stop. if you can pull on that string and it refuses to budge at your gentle tugging, it may have wrapped around an organ, or knotted in his intestine. we all are praying that does not happen for you and your kitty.

This has happened to most of us over the years with cats and tinsel, shoe strings, yarn etc. I have a cat that wool suckles and constantly passes little wool pellets. despite my constant attempts to remove wool from the house. (she has a secret stash somewhere i think)
I would also highly recommend, if your kitty is eating ok, to suppliment his food with some "cat lax" or other type of fish oil containing foods. This will help lubricate his insides and help this pass through. similar to a hair ball.
Best of luck. be brave and let us know how he is.

Thank you everyone

He finally went to the bathroom last night, and the string like thing is gone. He did have a BIG BM though. I was in there when he went and he didn't seem to have trouble getting it out, so that's good! He is still eating well..etc. In fact, he is extremely hyper today for some reason..LOL

Thanks again!
