Spyder was put on Panmycin Aquadrops, which is tetracycline. Right after I give it to him, he gets this long hanging drool from the corner of his mouth.

Is that a normal reaction?
Maybe because it is bitter to him?

Any thoughts?

I've only seen a cat do that when they get a taste of their medicine (pill form)?

This is a liquid antibiotic.
The vet has never given me this kind for any of the kitties before...it's usally amoxicillian or clavamox.

It could be a normal reaction, your cat probably doesn't like the taste.

I tried giving my cat a benedryl pill [[I know your meds are liquid]] and I had to do it like 5 times because he kept hiding it, and he started foaming. We've had a cat foam over the lysine paste. So he probably is just not pleased with the medication. He doesn't seem to be having any other symptoms does he? And I'm assuming he eventually stops foaming?

You might also give him his meds, and with a suringe squirt some water in his mouth [[carefully]] if it's a taste problem that might help things go down.

I agree that this could possibly be due to the taste, Diane, although, as I'm sure you've already planned, this would be worth a phone call to Spyder's Vet just to be sure!

I'm sure you would only give your kitty Benadryl with approval and careful monitoring from your Vet.

Thanks for the replys everyone!

Yes, he only drools right after he gets the meds (I have to keep a paper towel handy) and if there's any after that it's just a tiny bit and then no more.

I think he's starting to feel a little better because he's rubbing up against my leg today and he hasn't done that in a few days.

I'll give the vet a call on Monday if it still concerns me (if it seems like he's not getting any better)

my cat did that when i had to give her some liquid medicine, she started foaming at the mouth and drooling like crazy. scared me half to death!!
i called the ER vet and they said it was very common, that when cats get a taste of anything they do not like, they will drool in response.

as long as your kitty only does it when you give the medicine you can probably relax!!

I wuld still call the vet and tell him/her what is going on since each cat is different. Also ask him to see if he can compond the liquid in to beef/chicken or fish flavor - kitty might be able to handle this better. All the best!!!

Thanks again everyone!

I gave Spyder his medicine this morning and...no drool!
I tried holding his mouth closed for about 5 seconds after I put the medicine in there and wiped his mouth before I let him go.
So, I'll try it again that way this afternoon and see if it works again.

I suspect it's due to the taste. Shake the bottle well and keep it cold (unless the directions say otherwise) because this makes the taste a little less objectionable.

You can also mix the dose in a glob of meat baby food (read the label and make sure it is onion free). Most cats will eat this and not even notice the medicine as long as there is enough baby food to dilute the bad taste.
