Hello, I just registered to the site today, because I have a kitten(part of a litter of 4)that is apparently getting sick. I don't have much money, maybe enough to go buy something from a pet store, but.....when he was first born about a month ago, he was seemingly the healthist of the litter, always the first to fight for food, with a chubby little belly. At about 2 weeks old, one of his eyes got a little cold in it, and it closed shut for a day or two. It reopened with no problem, and everything seemed to be back on track. But in the past week, it came back again, seemingly accompanied by more symptoms. Sickness, lack of appetite, and his eye closed again(not sure if it was the same one or not). He couldn't be sweeter, so I was holding him and loving him last night, and just praying that it would go away on its own like it did the last time. However, when I woke up today, the other eye is stuck shut. He's just sitting there, on the big pillow nest we made for all of them, in the dark now because of his eyes. The other three babies are all completely hyperactive and healthy little horses, tackling each other and fighting over the kitten food. He used to be the same way. Please...is there anything I can possibly do on not alot of money to help him? I've tried saerching everywhere on the internet, and all I keep getting are these same search pages that lead to more search pages, the same crap over and over. I really need help. PLEASE.

PS. This was Mama's first litter, and she's healthy, also a little horse when it comes to food.

First, welcome to TCS......this little one does need to see a vet. Also, moma may be healthy..but she definately should be spayed...especially since you are having trouble taking care of her kitten's medical needs. What I would suggest you do is contact local vets and see if they can put you on a payment plan so that this kitten can be seen and attended to. Also, below is a site that has a list of low cost clinics, you can scroll down until you find your state and click on it. There will be a list of low cost and some free spay clinics. I recommend you contact ones in your state and set up her spay appt. for when the kittens are weaned (6 to 8 weeks of age). In the meantime, make sure that you keep your moma cat indoors only until she is spayed so that she does not become pregnant again.

I would agree that the kitty needs to see a vet and would urge you to not try and treat this yourself with products from a pet store unless a vet tells you do so. Many vets work with their clients on payment plans- I hope you will take these words to heart and make an appointment.

Exactly! My 12 week old kitten had just a little cold and runny eye, but he was so quiet and just wanted to sleep. Wasn't even himself. These guys are so little, just a common little cold can really get them down. And it's SO easy to fix some of these things. PLEASE see the vet.

First, use a warm, wet washcloth to open his eyes. They are just stuck shut with dry mucus, which is easily washed away.

Then go to the vet. A kitten who is acting sick is almost certainly *very* sick and can die without treatment. Treatment is probably going to be straightforward and relatively inexpensive (antibiotics and maybe fluid therapy), but it has to be done. Trust me on the importance of this - if you seek vet care, this kitten will be alive and healthy long after you're done missing the money.

i can only echo what the others have said, and although it might be too late, it would be a good idea to isolate this sick kitty from its siblings, or soon you will have four sick kitties.

and please spay the momma cat!

I would not advise that you try and open the eyes. It is one thing to just lay a damp warm cloth on the eyes, but if you have to pry the eyes open, you can hurt this kitten's eyes. Please see a vet, or at least call one and get a professional's idea as to what to do and do safely.
