I just shake out the towel (outside), throw it in the wash and put down a fresh one. Works great!

Has anyone ever tried the Cats Rule Perfect Litter Mat ?? They claim that it is "The first litter mat that effectively traps litter"

Mine jump over the litter mats they have on two of their boxes so I never bought them more. I am going to switch to a towel or something under the box instead.

I use a green litter mat I bought at PetsMart and it works and the cats don't mind stepping on it. I had to buy the biggest size though...the little one did almost nothing for us. I like it because it isn't all prickly or scratchy like other litter mats, but it catches all of the litter and holds it unlike a towel or newspaper.

Here it is:

I use this one too and it works very well. One of my cats likes to leap out of the box, so I still have some scattered litter. When they actually walk on the mat it works great!

Astroturf does an excellent job of snagging litter from cat toes, and you can cut it to fit the area you have. The only caveat is don't use it if your cat likes to chew plastic, because he/she will eat the little plastic grass blades. You can buy astroturf floor mats at most home improvement stores and wallyworld.

ha. we were using an old doormat-type rug for Spike which worked pretty well, but when Sparky came home he started peeing all over the place so we had to get rid of the rug, which was his primary target. so now we don't use anything, we just close the door leading through our closet so that they have to walk on the tile floor for a bit and most of it falls off then we just sweep it up every day.

If you have a cat that likes to pee on things near their litter box. Then rugs wont work for you. But I have used shag carpeting, it is nice and long, and catches anything they have on their feet.

I think this is a great post...totally inspired me to "do something" about my tracking situation.

I was gonna go with shag carpeting but then decided that I might as well try buying a bathroom rug since they're very similar and is already pre-cut with an assortment of designs for aesthetics. Bought a large one at Target and so far...is working pretty well! Went to clean the litter box today and didn't have to do akward yoga poses to avoid stepping on tracked litter!

I used to use an Omega Litter Mat, but would still have to sweep twice a day, although the mat did catch a LOT of litter. However, they were jumping over it!

The new problem with my bathroom rug idea, however, is that it's so comfortable for them to step on that they lay on it and sometimes sleep on it...I'll continue to post as this tracking situation develops

The litter i use is very fine grains so it gets everywhere which is why i always have a small brush and pan by the side, but i'm going to try the towel trick.

We have tried just about every kind of litter mat you can buy plus door mats, of all varieties and sections of carpet ... they all get peed on (a sign of felined disapproval I'm sure
) and they still don't control the tracking. We just switched to the Booda clean step litter box, and that is working really well, I think I could get by with sweeping every other day.

Also, regarding the swifer carpet thingie, I don't own one, but from the commercials, it looks like a standard floor sweeper, the kind that have been around for 100+ years (I know Bissel makes one) the only difference being that sticky thing ... I'm not sure what that does that a standard sweeper doesn't do. I think the Bissel ones run around $20 or $30, but you don't have any consumable parts, they last forever and they work very well on carpet and hard floors. A small whisk broom and dustpan do the trick too.

what I use is one of those indoor outdoor fake grass looking carpet pieces it's plastic and can be washed off easily but the plastic "grass" fibers trap the litter so you can shake it outside it works great

i have one of those, too. but when i got Chip, i added a box. my bedroom closet has 2 boxes. under them are the 2 rugs that came with the boxes, plus a decorative rug on top - this combo completely fills the closet floor. then i put the paw shaped mat at the doorway. litter tracking into the bedroom has dimished immensely since i 'carpeted' the closet!

Yep, it has been awhile since I purchased the litter mat called Group One's Litter Welcome Mat, but it's worked extremely well for catching litter. I have one litter box that is hooded and I barely have a mess around that litter box since using the litter mat.

It works, as long as it's not a lot of litter you're picking up. My cats don't track litter so much as fling it around outside the box, huge piles of it. I need to find a bigger box I think.

I've seen a few posts about cats that sometimes pee high enough that it leaks over the sides of the litter box. That and the litter tracking problem. I solved both by placing the litter box on top of one of those trays that goes underneath a washing machine. It's about 36"x36" and very easy to clean. Most of the litter seems to fall off in those first few steps as they come out of the box. Any urine drips out of the box are easily cleanable with a paper towel or can be hosed off when changing the litter. I got mine at Home Depot for about $18.
