Take a paper grocery bag and cut out one side of it. Set the bag inside the litter box, then cut down the folds HALFWAY, so that you can fold the sides of the bag over the sides of the box. Place the cut-out side in the box too for extra lining.

When you change the litter you can just tip the box up so it pools in the bottom of the bag, then discard it. The bag keeps the box much cleaner and helps absorb some of the smell. It's also a great way to get rid of those paper grocery bags.

I used to use the plastic liners you can buy, but two of my three cats aren't declawed and they tear the heck out of the liners, defeating their purpose. These paper liners are much more durable.

i have the littermaid automatic boxes. i line the receptacle with small sized garbage bags. they fit better than the plastic grocery bags. i use those when i'm emptying the box - tie closed the liner bag, then transfer to a garbage bag & tie that closed. still stinks [so move it to the garage garbage can asap
] but doesn't leak while you're carrying it out!

Too bad my boxes are too big, or I'd do that. My kittens tear up their liners, too. They like paper even more than they like plastic, though, so maybe it wouldn't work any better.
