My April's 7 kittens, Baby, Scotchie, Paws, Butterball, Sparky, Gary, and Robyn are getting huge! I think a little more plump than the average 8 week old kittens due to April's still nursing them regularly. Anyway, as cute as they are, they are beginning to stink horribly! April has always had an extremely fowl smelling litterbox, but the kittens are also beginning to leave this odor. I clean out the litterboxes everyday, but it's still so horrible. Is it due to the food I'm feeding them (purina kitten chow) or just the amount of cats? Possibly someone knows something else that it could be. Anyway does anyone know how I can help this?

If the mom has always had a smelly box, it definitely could be the food. You might want to try a higher quality food and see if that helps. I don't know if now is the best time, however (not sure if you should be risking upset stomach with the young ones, since diarrhea in kittens can be fatal if excessive). I know when i changed my cat's food from Iams to Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul (much higher quality) her litter box situation improved a lot.

it's definately the food your feeding. My kittens get raw meat recipe and they don't stink at all. It's funny about this litter of kittens. They are only 4 weeks old and they ran over to momma's bowl and started chomping down on her meat! They are so little and they are chewing huge pieces of meat!! They love it. I had a problem with the previous litter before I was feeding meat it took me a long time to get them to eat solid. It seems with the meat the kittens just knew what to do. I was not expecting them to eat momma's food at such an early age!

I would suggest getting at least 2 more litterboxes. As they grow larger they will be less tolerant of the smell and may start using the potty elsewhere!!!! Scoop the litter as often as possible and I personally change the enire litter and box at least once a month, and I only have one cat. So you can imagine all the extra odor your brood is accumulating
Well good luck I hope you find a solution that works for you ChiChi and I send you all lots of kitty love

I would recommend a higher quality kitten food...one with meat as the main ingredient and not chicken-by-product or corn or wheat. The rescue I volunteer with feeds Eukanuba Kitten food.
