I can never seem to get it right where certain posts belong, so I apologize ahead of time if this doesn't belong here.

Anyhow, I just heard from someone that a bunch of cats in a nearby town have been turning up dead and they think someone is poisoning them with anti-freeze! Ughh.

I am going to call the PD now as well as the local shelter to see if I can get anymore information.

Once I have more info, and if it is true - I will be contacting members of the NHARL (Animal Rights League) and getting the ball rolling. I swear- if it is animal cruelty, I will do everything in my power to make sure they (whoever is doing this) pay for what they are doing.

Ughh - just had to get that off my chest. Sorry. =)

That is just HORRIBLE!!! I hope the monsters are caught and proscuted to the fullest extent of the law, although we already know that it won't be NEARLY enough! Please see this website to HELP change the weak sentences that animal abusers get. www.animal-justice.org

Thanks everyone! I'm about to make the calls now.

Rockcat, thanks for the link! I have a link in my sig that is a pdf of a brochure on animal cruelty. It's extremely disturbing to read but for those who really want to make a difference, it's almost a must-read.. it really gets your blood boiling. I truly don't understand how there are so many people out there doing such horrible things to cats!
I mean, yes- there are unfortunately going to be sick people that do these things- but it seems like we have this happening all too often. It's totally unacceptable and I can not believe there aren't tougher punishments! That's exactly WHY it's happening so much!!

has national directory of contacts for reporting this type of cruelty.
In addition you can monitor the case brought against the individuals. They also provide the Prosacuting attorney and court for you to send letters to.

An elderly couple on my block tried to do that as well, because they are avid bird watchers and the cats keep nabbing a few birds. They were warned by the PD and have stopped, but thats why I wanted to get that nice cat in my yard to a good home so I dont have to think about what those people might do if they try it again.

Geez- how much can they truly be any kind of animal lover if they're hurting any animal at all? I would LOVE to be left alone for just 5 minutes w/ someone I witnessed hurting a cat. Ughh.

Well everyone, I called the PD dept. and the lady that answered said she hadn't heard of anything. She said the detective working (who was on the phone) most likely wouldn't know anything but that I'd want to check w/ the officers on patrol. She said they'd call me back w/ any information.

I called my local shelter (which is about a 1/2 hr away from this town) and the lady that answered hadn't heard of anything. She did give me the number to that particular town's shelter.

I just called them and they close at 1:30pm so I just left a message.

We'll see. I need to work on getting more information. I need to get more information from the poeple who have claimed its happened to them, or witnessed it in some way.

Hopefully I'll get somewhere here... I don't give up too easily so if there's validity to this - I will find out.

Your Very welcome.
It is a very Sobering site. I wish that it didnt have to exhist. but it has a LOT of very good information. I use it and send in many letters to help push for reformation about the laws. they are just to lean. IMHO.
Just as a warning, for anyone wanting to use that site, please be careful and note that there is some very frank depictions of the cruelty man can inflict upon helpless animals. Not a lot, but enough to make "normal" people like us sick to our stomachs.

Good luck xomycatsxo I hope your actions lead to the arrest of these people.

Middletown,

I am so glad you joined this site and are sharing your wisdom!
I KNOW I'll be picking your brain because I too want to start becoming very active in pushing for tougher punishments. I could use any advice you have from personal experience, and where someone like me would begin.

The link in my sig is actually a pdf file of a booklet for law enforcement, judges, prosecutors, etc. It cost $1 each from Peta but I'm amazed at how much it hits everything home. Like I mentioned, very disturbing but you know what, reality is very disturbing and people need to take a stand.

Any tips on who to start sending letters to, etc. would be great. I know I already have some info - but any insight from you would be great!
Thank you (and thank you for all the work you are doing to fight animal cruelty!!). Hats off to you...

I am very happy to be here and see so many people who love cats as much as I do. I am sorry my office firewall wont let me see your PDF. Ill look at it @ home. I hope that you donâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t give me to much credit, I am just like you, someone who loves animals and feels passionately about it enough to do something about it. Most people feel so overcome by the problems we face with pets: overcrowding, feral animals, abuse, little or no consequence to any of it. The hardest part is getting started. The best thing anyone can do, is just to bring awareness into your everyday life. Let people know. Not that you have to grab a soapbox and preach, but you will always find an opening in some conversation where you can bring about awareness. Or find your local shelter and volunteer. Etc I donâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t want to high jack this so I would be happy to answer any PMâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s you send.
Ill end with one of my biggest motivators:

I looked at all the caged animals in the shelter...the cast-offs of human society.
I saw in their eyes love and hope, fear and dread, sadness and betrayal.
And I was angry!
"God," I said, "this is terrible! Why don't you do something?"
God was silent and then He spoke softly.
"I have done something," He replied.
"I created You."

Ric,

You are NOT at all "high-jacking" this conversation .. I can almost bet anyone here thinks what you bring to the table is nothing short of amazing. I think it's so great and I'm sure not the only one that will want to pick your brain, or hear about your experiences so far.

Who do you think I should send a letter to? Do you have a sample letter you use that you would be willing to share with everyone?!?

I'm so excited.
I don't think this post is getting off topic at all.. I can't see this being in the wrong place or anything.. I think we're safe to talk about this??? I'm queen of posting things in the wrong area... or doing something wrong (or so it seems). hehe.

I'm looking forward to talking with you more.. and others who feel as strongly!

Strange but even talking to people who feel as strongly as I do about this topic- makes the original issue I posted seem a little better.

Thanks everyone!

that is so beautiful! Bless you all for caring so much for cats that you are willing to face the harsh realities of what actually occurs. As sickening as it is to read about, it is much harder for the cats to actually have to live it & yes, we need to do our utmost to stop it.

There's an excellent thread about fighting animal cruelty in the IMO section. I am just at my 30 days of being here but it's still not letting me in, I assume I am awaiting activation. Once I get in, I'll be posting there as well. =)

I dont have anything specific. It really helps if it is personal and comes from you and your heart as opposed to something generic. People can identify a "form letter" and do not give any respect anymore than junk mail.

Here is some helpful sites.

If you are having trouble with the local athorities listening, Media works wonders. TV, newspaper your local NPR radio, community college etc. a couple of phone calls and letters to the editor do wonders. "human interest" stories are the common theme now and most local media will jump on a good chance to "break open" a story.
Once youve decided what to do, dont give up because you dont see immediate results. Polite persistance goes a long way.

The most horrible aspect is that "antifreeze or radiator fluid" is ethalyne gylcol. Digesting it is a HORRIBLE death for domesticated animals.the sweet aroma and taste lures the animals into drinking a lot of the fluid. It attacks their nervous system. severe convulsions, pain and suffering will follow and there is little that can be done to help. Vets can only euthanize the animal. it is truly a horrible thing to see.
I lost a dog several years ago to a neighbor who hated dogs. He poisioned ours and another dog down the street with this stuff. Shasta was such a sweet dopey loving dog too
I can relate that taking action into your own hands by retaliating only gets you into trouble.

If you own a garage or have a car that leaks radiator fluid with an outside animal, please make sure its clean and there are no spills. Cats and Dogs just cant help but be curious and that smell lures them.

I hope this helps. Ill be AFK most of today. month end work is busy, but PM or post and I will offer what I can when I can.
Good Luck and thank you so much for caring.!

I did a lot of research on anti-freeze last night so read everything you are telling me.. it really is a horrible thing! I read that there's another type of anti-freeze you can use that is a lot safer for humans and animals.

I'm sorry to hear about your dog, I can understand why you're so passionate about this.

I would absolutely make something personable- I'm in sales - I know how important that is.
I just didn't know if there were etiquette rules to go by. Just as in writing books, etc- if you don't write it the correct way, it won't get looked at - whether you have a good story or not.

Thanks again, I'll keep you posted!

Good another sales person.
Me too. :clap
Yes there are other fluids that are safe. they also tend to be expensive and not readily available. Most people still drive to walmart to save that $.02 they are not going to spend anouther $2 for a safer automobile fluid with the cost of gas.
I am glad to see you reading. that is the best thing. educate yourself and others. If you have a hubbie or children, share with them what you are learning. it goes a long way.
