The ISEC, international society for endangered cats, only recommends one breed of cat for a household pet. The egyptian mau.

Here's the link to their site.
ISEC
Scroll to the bottom of the page to see the comment and the picture of a Mau.
I wonder if it's bad wording or if these people are so far out there, that they think no other cats makes good companion animals.

I think what they mean is of the "wild" breeds its the only one they reccomend...but the wording is weird! Makes it seem like they dont think people should have Bengals or DSHs or what have you.

To me it sounds as if that Princess Isis is the only one out of those cats on the link is able to be a domestic pet - the rest are ambassadors for this society and are not able to be kept as pets. And as for adoption - maybe it is the same as the way you adopt an animal in a zoo - you adopt it for the zoo in your name. I hope I am making sense.

to me, because the word 'domestic' is in bold, they are stating that she is the only one of the breeds shown that should be kept. the others are wild cats, not domestic cats.

I worry about any animal being an ambassador. Often, that means they are hauled around in cages being shown off. I know, that is what I do every saturday, trying to get my fosters adopted, and they hate it. How much worse it would be for a wild animal!

Hopefully these animals are well cared for!

I think what they mean, is the Mau is the only cat on that page that is suitable for adoption, as she's the only domestic cat on the page. I don't think they mean that it's the only domestic cat suitable, just the only cat on their page.

Makes more sense to me now that I can see it from different perspectives. My next question was going to be...why the Mau over all other breeds, but it's a moot point now.
I think Mau's are great by the way. One of my very favorite breeds.

Yep after seeing your words and then reading theirs I see where there was confusion. But if you look again it makes sense!

I too think it is quite clear: All the other cats there are wild cats. And the "adoption" is not for home but as a sponsorship.

The Mau is the only of the cats mentioned suitable as a domestic cat.
An ancient ex wild - domesticed race.

The only unusual here is them counting the Mau not as a domestic among others domestic cat races - little unusual and worth wider spreading - but as a especial race worth preserving.

That page was last updated in January, 1999 - almost 6 years ago! Does not seem to be a very active organization any more.
