When my cat, Blackbutt, became pregnant, I hoped for a calico like Blackbutt's mother, Neveah, who recently passed away. I was happy when the first born appeared to be a calico. within a few days it was apparent that she would be the spittin' image of her grandmother, with extra toes. two of Neveah's other offspring (Casper, my big boy; and a kitten given to a friend who named him ricky) had seven toes on their front paws (commonly known as hemmingway cats) i can never tell kittens sex when they are young, and never thought to look knowing that male calicos are rare. A friend of mine told me it was a male. (I could not tell) and the veterinarian confirmed. having said all this, does anyone know of another male calico hemmingway? or the genetic probability? any info would be appreciated. i am new here and will soon add pictures of all my four cats. Thanks.

Actually they are called polydactyls and they are genetic abnormality- but they are also wonderful and intelligent cats. Male calicos are not all that rare, and they are sterile. I hope you have decided to get your female cat spayed now after this litter she gave you.

Welcome to TCS! Congratulations on your new calico kitten & the rest of the litter. I look forward to the pics - I've never seen a male calico before! I used to have 7 toed cats (their father was a 7toed feral and their mother was a stray that I caught & tamed when she was p.g.) and they used their 7th toe like thumbs - they could climb chain-link fence! They also loved to swim. I had them neutered, so when they passed, I was unable to replace them. I have other cats, so that was okay, but those cats did have some really spectacular traits. Also, they would do dog tricks that they learned by observing my daughter & me work with our border collie. What are the personalities of Casper & Ricky? See ya in the forums! Susan
