There's been a lot of posting about overweight cats, and I was curious. I expect Chaynal to be a really big kitten, since he was the biggest his breeders' had ever had, but I want to be sure he's not "too big". I've seen the diagrams for looking at cats to tell if they're overweight, but this just doesn't seem to work for him. Looking from behind and above, he looks chubby, but I can't tell if its just his fur since Birmans are a longish medium hair length. When I try and feel underneath his fur, he doesn't feel especially rounded. I can feel his ribs without any trouble (they're not sticking out, don't worry!). So guys, how to you tell if a fluffy long-haired cat is overweight?

If you look at kitty there should be a line where the body ends and hair begins ... the waist area is where I find it easiest to see... also can you feel the ribs thru the fur

So you mean when he sits down or does it matter for the haunches? I can definately feel his ribs, not like they're sticking out, but they're there without having to try hard at all.

Yay thanks! Those diagrams do nothing for a fluffy kitty.
He's such a big kitten, definately at least 10 pounds now at 6 months and solid as a rock!

Willow's another one of those cats who looks overweight but is actually at a proper weight (veering slightly into being underweight, due to a pig of a kitty-mate). Her hair is so long, especially on her belly, and her legs are a little bit short, so she just looks naturally porky.
