Okay, Marlee was having diarrhea with a little blood last weekend, was taken to the vet, and given Albon for Coccidia. She has been on that once a day since last Monday. Her diarrhea stopped that night, and she has been eating so much better! (Yay!) But I noticed yesterday she has been having constipation? Maybe, I'm not sure. When she goes, its just a little ball or so most of the time, and it seems like her little bum is irritated. I think this b/c I'll check her poop after she goes, and it doesnt look like there is blood IN the poop, but on the outside, like from an irritated butt. I'm going to call the vet in the morning, since they are closed, but what could this be from? Just from the anti-diarrheal meds? Any opinions would be much appreciated.

She might have gone the other way with the anti-diarrheal meds. If kitty's bum looks a little red and sore, then you could get a cotton bud with a little bit of warm water and just gently wipe the area (Very gently as it could be sore) just to give a little bit of relief until you can get to the vet.

Poor kitty! Not nice to have a sore bum!

I'll try that. I know, I feel so bad for her! But atleast she's not whining or anything when going to the bathroom, so I take that as a good sign! Any other opinions are welcome!

I don't really know how to tell when a kitty is straining? She will sit in a "squat" kinda for a few minutes, and sometimes I can see her little muscles working, so I guess that would be considered straining? Should I wait until after I talk to the vet tomorrow before giving her the dose of Albon? The reason I ask is b/c she has been getting her meds in the morning before I leave for school, but I will have to call after I leave so I can wait on the vet to open.

Okay, this post may be a little too much info. Poor Marlee is definately constipated. She just got through trying to poop, and she was able to get a little ball out of her butt, but it wouldn't fall off. I got a tissue to help her, and I dont really know why shes having trouble b/c the stool was pretty soft. But one thing that is good, when I pulled the poop off, I was able to see the inside of it and there is no blood on the inside, just on the outside, like from her butt or rectum. I know that is still hurtful for Marlee, but hopefully is better than blood in the actual stool. I'll still be calling the vet ASAP tomorrow. Also open to anyone else's advice!

Shes been on Science Diet since I got her, its what the vet sent home. I know from reading and asking questions on here that this food is not the best, but I was wanting to give her time to let her stomach settle before changing her food again. I bought some Eukanuba kitten to feed her. Should I go ahead and start switching her, think that would help or make it worse? I also feed her Meow Mix wet pouches, in very small portions usually just once a day.

None of those foods are good IMO so I wouldn't switch her right now if your just swithcing to another dry food brand.

Can I ask why you don't like Eukanuba? I had one other person on hear say she didn't either. I thought the ingredients sounded pretty good since it had chicken as the first ingredient. But I am new at picking out this good kitty food...? I only bought the small bag, so if I need to change to something different after this, I can. I know I was told that Nutro was better, but I was just having trouble figuring it all out. B/c Nutro and another brand that was recommended to me (cant remember which one now) both had meals as the first ingredient, thats why I got Eukanuba. So to know why you don't like Eukanuba would be great to know! Thanks

Certainly you should probably phone your vet in the morning, but here is a response a couple of days ago when some other member was having a problem.

use canned pumpkin or cooked and mashed green beans- much better for the kitty
I thought you might have one of these or both in your home or maybe go out to the store tonight to get her some relief (or at least try to get her to eat to see if it will work)

I don't actually have a prefrence in any dry brand. All of them have too many carbs from grains and are cooked so much to get them into dry form that they can hardly be digested.
I feed raw meat so I can't recommened one brand or the other.
I guess if you must feed dry kibble the one with the least amount of grain fillers and "meal/by products" would be best.

I talked to the vet today. He said not to be too worried yet. Since she had been having diarrhea, and was taking Albon (her last dose was yesterday), that she probably got a tiny tear in her rectum from finally having normal stool pass. If it is still there tomorrow or the next day, I'll take her in. So far today haven't seen any!
