So, I just came downstairs into our kitchen and family room area to watch some TV, and saw, on the other side of the glass door, some random guy sitting on my back deck looking into the house!!!
AACK!
When he saw me he ran away--well, stumbled away quickly at least. He looked homeless and appeared to at least be VERY drunk if not on some other sort of drug. The scary thing is he wouldv'e had to hop over either the front or back gate to get back there, both gates are locked and about 6 feet high! So I'm worried it was intentional and not just some random wandering drunk bum--although my next door neighbor's gate could've been open (they can be a bit careless about it) and he couldve hopped over their lower fence in their back yard to get to my deck...
Fortunately the door was locked and the alarm was on so had he tried to get INTO the house he wouldn'tve gotten very far, but UNFORTUNATELY my husband is at work until 2 AM and I can't get in touch w/ him to come home as he's working at a corporate event for Honda and can't answer his cell phone.

I'm just having a hard time breathing normally and am truly stumped as to how he couldve gotten back there w/out hopping our gate...
Well, I guess I won't be sleeping until my hubby gets home!!!

A stranger peering into your house at night? I don't think it would be overreacting to give the police a call. Especially since you can't get in touch with your husband. They might at least send a squad car into your neighborhood.

I would have called the police to come. Hopefully he is gone. You stay safe.

I just called the non-emergency police # and they're supposedly going to send out a car to drive around and see if they can find someone wandering around...since I live in the middle of Chicago my call isn't a real high priority would be my guess, but I know the cops do drive-bys in my neighborhood during the night time anyway, so hopefully they'll grab him and be able to throw him somewhere to "dry up" for the night. He didn't seem like he was trying to get IN to the house, he was obviously messed up on something and was probably just looking for a place to sleep it off. He was clearly under the influence of something as he stumbled away... he was quite startled when he saw me coming! He probably didn't even realize he was in someone's yard.
And, upon further inspection, my neighbors back gate was wide open. So frustrating. I'm thinking we're gonna put a taller fence in between our two houses since they can't seem to keep their back gate closed, idiots. They'll probably be pissed at us for building a higher fence, but its either that or I have homeless guys camping out on my deck!!!
I'm trying to get in touch w/ my husband to come home early...I'll feel better if he's here!

That is scary! I think you did the right thing by calling the non-emergency line. At least they will keep an eye out for the guy when they drive around that night.

That is so scary!! I hope that the police do find him, for everyone's sake. Even if the intruder is harmless, he could get hit by a car in the dark, or perhaps the next homeowner will take a gun out & shoot him! You poor thing! I wish that someone could come over to keep you company till your hubby gets home
I'm sure that Emma & Oliver will alert you to any other goings-on!
