I`d use a warm, wet rag or an uncented baby wipe if i SAW anything clinging....but otherwise I would`nt worry about it if it is`nt anything you can smell without actually getting your nose close. They usually do a pretty good job of keeping themselves clean, unless sometimes it is a little kitten who has`nt yet learned the ropes of hitting all the places. (I imagined they`d think we did`nt always smell too great either , if they stuck their noses up to our bums) ...You know how they say that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder"? ....welll maybe the same is true for what we , and they, think does`nt smell good.

A smelly bottom without any other obvious cause(like not cleaning it properly) can sometimes be a symptom of a problem with her anal sacs. A healthy cat bottom should be fairly odour free. Sometimes cats with blocked or infected anal sacs will scoot across the floor to try and ease their discomfort - but not always! These anal sacs can sometimes rupture and this is very painful for the cat so if you are in any doubt, check with your vet!

It can also be worms, the wrong food, or a health issue

Oh, to be blissfully unaware of what "scooting" is!
Pushy is a scooter - he doesn't do it often, but ya know, once is often enough (especially as we have creamy coloured carpet). Gross for us and uncomfortable for the cat. The vet says there's not much we can do.
Wiggies tends to be unclean in his privates - he takes a while to get around to cleaning himself after going to the bathroom - so I keep a designated cat washcloth on hand and wet it with warm water to wipe the cats' bums.
They don't like it, but it keeps them cleaner.

Does pushy have problems with his anal sacs?

- I also have a little scooter, although thankfully we have have not seen any scooting around here for quite some time now that we are on top of the problem!

A smelly bottom can happen with a change of food - Sometimes our little boy gets a bit of a smelly bum depending on what he eats! I suppose its just like if we have fried onions or beans!
