Okay.
I experienced a major urban myth in the making this afternoon, and believed it until I got to the gas station.
Has anyone else heard rumors and "first hand" accounts of gas increasing by double (or more) this afternoon from what was this morning?
My BF and I both heard that gas was going to over $5 this afternoon, and that we'd better go fill up before every station in the valley was up. I evern heard someone in my office who had just returned form the field say that she'd SEEN $5.02 a gallon just down the road. My BF has a coworker who said her friend in the city about 45 minutes west of here said gas was $5.10.
So since I was at a half a tank, I went out at lunch and filled up...I figured if I could still find it at $2.75 I'd better take it before it got to $5.
I headed home this evening, and all the gas stations still had around $2.75.

Has anyone else experienced this, or do I just live around morons? hehe

After this hurricane hits, it could easily get up to over $5 a gallon. It's because of Hurricane Rita right now. It's been on the news here, everyone will be hit hard from Rita, not just us with rain and strong winds.

I heard that it will probably go up a great deal after the hurricane hits, but no one around here was saying that it was going to be happening today. I think in this area most people are taking it as speculation.

I heard on the news that schools are closed in the state of Georgia on Monday (and maybe Tuesday, too). This is all to save on fuel from not running the buses.

18 of the 26 oil refineries in the gulf shut completely down. On CNN, a guy from one of those companies said it would take at least 2 weeks to get them completely up and running again. Those refineries refine the oil for about 1/3 of the US so yeah, it could easily get over $5/gallon.

That's really interesting. I hope it's just an urban myth! They said on our local news that a lot of people are filling up before the weekend in anticipation of rising gas prices because of Rita, but they are just saying that it's anticipated to go back up above $3.00.

I heard on the news here (In Michigan) this AM that it could go up to $5 a gallon OR MORE depending on what happens when Rita hits. Guess we won`t be too long in finding out.

I filled up yesterday, and it was down a penny here today. but I am sure it will go up.
Can't hardly afford to drive to work anymore.

with gas prices they way they are and the amount i make, it is slowly approching the point where i won't beable to afford ro drive to work. i am 8 miles from my job and work nights. the main road is not bike or ped. friendly and with few street lights once you past the airport. so its a walk/ bike at your own risk deal. i told my boss this she laughed, thinking im jokeing.
