...but I don't know who it is!!

Someone peed on the floor this morning, and I don't know if it was Leo or Lola. The level of litter had gotten low (I had to be away from home alllllll day yesterday, so apprently when my friend scooped booth times ysterday, he didn't put any more litter in). Normally Leo would use an empty litterbox if he had to and I've never had any problems with him inappropriately peeing in the entire time I've had him. Lola had a single bed-wetting experience once upon a time (when she was staying with a cat sitter who didn't scoop her box and I was out of town), but had no subsequent problems and at that point was cleared for FLUTD.

They're both eating well and behaving normally and when the litter box went back to normal, all activity remained contained to the litterbox. I cleaned the spot up with vingegar for now (it's hardwood floors) and covered it up with a box, although, they keep coming in to sniff it curiously. Both have clean bottoms and when I saw Leo use the box this afternoon, he didn't strain or anything. There was no blood in the urine this morning.

So, knowing that I have no idea which is teh culprit, what should I do? I don't want to unecessarily stress them out with a vet trip when only one of them peed on the floor. But, if it seems necessary, of course I'll do it. I have to admit, the litterbox was NOT in its normal state, so I'm thinking that could have had an effect on them, especially since we're still staying at someone elses' place (8 more days til we move!)...should I just watch them to see if it happens again, or should I take them both in?

Thanks for you input!!

Even when my cats have had really nasty UTIs in which the vet said he saw lots of blood (in the microscope) I could not see any blood in the urine I cleaned up. So, not being able to see blood is not a sign that they are ok.

Vinegar won't get rid of the smell. The enzymatic cleansers work fine on hardwood. But since you have put down vinegar (which is highly acidic) you will first need to neutralize the spot with a mix of water and baking soda and then after a day with the water and baking soda, wipe clean with a damp cloth and treat with a good enzymatic cleanser.

Since you know that there was a problem with the litter box at the time of the accident, I would wait to go to the vet. But if you find even one more accident, I would take them both in ASAP.

Thanks guys. This is my first experience with inapproriate peing, and I only have a partial idea of what I'm doing. I fixed the LB, added a new one and all seems normal. For a UTI, is there anything I should be looking for other than LB frequency, innapporiate peeing and straining? I have been keeping a close watch and haven't noticed any of those since the incident.

I have never noticed any unusual behavior in my cats who have developed UTIs other than the inappropriate peeing. However, if you notice that one pees a lot more often than usual and leaves only small amounts of urine, strains when peeing, or yowls while peeing, these are all signs of urinary problems. But, again, not all cats will have these symptoms.

Thanks for the advice. Thankfully, I haven't noticed anything since the incident...everything's normal and the amount of litterbox offerings is what I normally scoop, so I'm hoping that someone was just displeased with the state of the LB. I'll keep looking out for them, though! Thanks for the help!
