Do you have a carrier (or enough carrier space) for each of your pets?

Due to the evacuations preceding (or following) Katrina and Rita, I'm just wondering how many people actually have a carrier for each of their pets. I do, but that is largely by accident. I have the carrier I used for Jamie when he was little for ZsaZsa (a tiny cat, who's basically our "part-timer"), and the carrier I now use for Jamie (small to medium-sized dog carrier), plus a large dog carrier once bought for our last dog. I lost my "extra" (old) cat carrier when the police used it to transport a python, presumably an abandoned pet, that somehow or another ended up in our basement. My sister has three dogs and three cats, and I think she just has two cat carriers (one my mom bought, and one I bought). My mom has two big dogs and a cat, and she only has one large dog carrier, and recently gave her cat carrier to one of my nieces, who was moving. My sister-in-law once took a sick kitten to the vet's in a bird cage!
I can imagine that people with several cats and/or dogs might only have two cat carriers at most. Is this something that you worry about, in view of people having to evacuate?

I have 2 cats. When I adopted Charlotte, I was given a medium sized carrier that can easliy hold two cats. When I take either of my cats to the vet, I prefer a smaller carrier that only accomodates one pet (easier to carry) and have borrowed one from my boyfriend's mother so I don't have to buy another carrier. However, it probably would be a good idea to have a carrier per cat or per animal.

I saw a sturdy cardboard one (in "Whiskas" purple) at a veterinary clinic in the U.S. last year, but the guy didn't know where his wife had gotten it. It was perfect for fosters/rescues.

4 of my cats who get along in close questers will go in my dog's crate.
The other two who are pretty solitary each have their own carrier, by birds have their own carriers and the dog has his collars, harness, gentle leader, leashes, and just in case, a muzzle.

Check out the local shelters/rescue organizations! There are so many mature kitties that are waiting for loving homes. Our local one has a waiting list for kittens, but 15 older cats who seem to be overlooked because they're not cute little kittens.

I have two smaller soft carriers for my girls, and a larger hard carrier for the fosters. Unfortunately the most likely natural disaster here is an Earthquake, and usually you don't get warning to evacuate... but if I had to leave afterwards, I'm set.

But it is something to keep in mind.

we have 2 rubbermaid carriers (similar to sherpa) for raven and nabu. and a bigger hardsided one for stimpy. that's how we move and travel with the guys. in a pinch/hurry/emergency we would put raven and nabu in the big one and stimps in one of the other small ones.

That's definitely something to think about, given recent events.

We actually have more carriers than pets, now.

We have 5 cats & 2 dogs (50 & 40 lbs). We have 3 small/medium hard-sided cat carriers, 1 large hard-sided cat carrier, and 4 soft-sided cat carriers. After buying the first soft-sided carrier, I went back & got enough for all the indoor cats, because they have shoulder straps - if I need to, I can carry all 4 indoor cats at once
The soft-sided carriers are nice too because I can run the seatbelts through the carrier handles. I use the hard-sided carrier to transport our feral, just in case she freaks out, and if it was going to be a long drive I'd put Oreo in the big hard-sided carrier so he could be more comfortable - he's a pretty big cat.

For the dogs, we have a 36" metal crate (purchased for my RB dog Greta), a 42" metal folding crate that both dogs will fit in together comfortably that we used to use for travel, and we just bought a couple of soft-sided 36" dog kennels a few weeks ago when we found them for a good price at Big Lots. They are great for traveling - much lighter & easier to carry than the big metal crate.

In the unlikely event we have to evacuate, we would probably take the metal crates and the soft-sided dog kennels, put all the cats in their soft-sided cat kennels except for our feral, who would go in the hard-sided one. At a shelter or hotel, we could put the dogs together in the big metal crate, and use the other metal crate & soft dog kennels to put the cats in so they could stretch their legs & have space for a litter box. We'd probably take along the extra cat carrier too, in case someone else might need it, or if one of the cats got frightened & started clawing or biting the soft carrier too much.

No, but I really seriously need to get enough. All I have right now is one kitty carrier and one crate for my smallest dog. I really need another kitty crate. I can transport my dragon in a rubbermaid box. My other dogs are really too big for crates to be practical, or very portable, but muzzles (even though I don't think they'd ever bite) would be a good idea if we ever are evacuated for some reason, as a goodwill gesture that my dogs wouldn't bite anyone. And of course, they have collars, headcollars, and leashes. My fish, I'm afraid, would have to be left behind. I'm not sure how you'd evacuate fish, or how you'd have time to stand there with a net trying to catch them in an emergency!
As pet owners, it really is our responsibility to make sure we have the proper equipment to be able to evacuate our pets. We can expect them to be allowed, but we can't expect someone else to provide containment for them.
Food/water bowls, and keeping extra food on hand, is a good idea, too!

I agree - our dogs are also too big to carry in their kennels (we set up the kennels once we've arrived so they can have their "den"), so we'd have to have them out on leash to transport them, and muzzles would help make people less worried about allowing dogs. And even though I don't think our dogs would ever bite anyone (except an attacker), in the craziness of an evacuation setting it's better to be safe. I'll probably go shopping for muzzles for the dogs after the storm passes this weekend.

I have one soft sided and one hard sided, both are for pets up to 20lbs, though I have one 14 pounder and one 5 pounder. So, one per cat. Leo gets the soft and Lola gets the hard.

lol Two cats, two carriers, which came in handy just yesterday for moving the kitties from my apartment in College Station to my parents' house further north.
Thank goodness, I just bought the second carrier! The other I had loaned from a family friend. There are decently nice soft carriers at Big Lots rated for 15lb pets, only $25. I love it, gonna get a matching one since my other carrier is slightly too small now. (I've only had it for a month!!)
