I dont really know where to put this, so please move it if it's not OK.
My sister lives out in the country and has taken in alot of stray cats that show up at her house over the years. She has a very nice insulated outdoor cat house for them and food and water 24/7. She has to keep them outside because her husband is very allergic to cats. At night she has to pen up the little ones until they are 4-5 months old, because some wild animal always kills them until they are a certain size. She and her husband have sat many nights on top of their roof waiting for this wild animal to show up, but they've never seen it. She found 5 little kittens around 5-6 weeks old down the road in an abandoned barn while she was out for a walk. They were starving and need vet care, so she took them home with her. They were doing great except the older kittens hated them and she couldnt pen them up together at night. She had a large heavy duty pet taxi(I know this because it was mine) that she put the babies in at night and it was chained to the deck railing. The other morning at 6am she was preparing their food and she looked out her kitchen window and saw the pet taxi laying in the bean feild about 50 feet away. She ran out and found the chain had been broken, and the pet taxi had a small hole about the size of a quarter in the back corner of it but no blood or hair near the hole. She then realized all five kittens had been pulled out through the front wolven wire pet taxi door, which was still closed. She was finding pieces of them all over her yard. Does anyone know of an animal strong enough to break the chain, and clever enough to do this type of thing. And how could it get a hold of the kittens through the front door wires(evidence was clearly on the wires) and pull them out '1 inch by 1 inch' wire squares? And why is it just killing the kittens and not the bigger cats? We are all stumped over what it could be!

Oh, what a tragedy!! And how spooky! The other night, raccoons had two of my hens; somehow they'd reached through the chicken wire & had ahold of the hens; the hens were bleeding from face & neck. But I don't think that the raccoons could get through the chain that your sister had on the carrier. How awful for those poor baby cats - I am haunted by the thought of the terror that they felt as they perished one by one....
your poor sister & her hubby - I feel so badly for them as well.

I wish that they could set up a camera, or better yet, get an electric fence hooked up outside the cat cages - if they get one, tell them that I said they should put the setting on "Bull" strength!!
By the way, Rest In Peace, little kitties!! I am so sorry that your lives had to be so hard only to end in tragedy!

I would say off the top of my head, a raccoon got them. It depends on where she lives, and what types of predators are about.

We thought about raccoons at first, but I have raccoons in my own barn and they've never bothered the kittens...just the corn. If it was a raccoon it would have to be huge to have broken that chain, it was used to hold her porch swing up. She had it wrapped pretty tight around the railing and you can see where it's quite damaged where the chain was. It was connected to the pet taxi with a big nut and bolt on each side to hold the chain in place instead of by the handle, that's where the quarter size hole came from. the other side was still holding with the broken chain still attached. She really thought of everything to keep them safe from this thing. What's even more weird is their bedroom is not far away from where it was chained, and they didnt hear a thing, and all her other cats where not spooked the next morning, they were all laying around like they normally do.
It's really puzzling also as to why it doesnt bother the kittens once they reach a certain size. And it really didnt eat the kittens, she found alot small parts in a trail through her yard to the bean field... except for their heads.
I can only imagine what they went through and how terrified they were...and my poor sister is just sick with guilt for putting them in there trying to keep them safe.
My husband installs security cameras and he just said he would see what he could set up for them(my sad puppy dog face works every time). I'll keep you informed if they catch it on tape.

YOur sister shouldn't blame herself. The kittens would not have survived in the barn where she found them. She was doing what she thought was right for them and that is all one can do. Bless her heart, I know it upset her. It upsets me too. Let us know if they find out what is causing the problem.

That's just terrible! Poor babies!

Here we have wild dogs and coyotes to contend with, as well as raccoons and possums. I never would have imagined ANY of those animals being that determined to get at those kittens, though. I hope they catch something on videotape to solve this mystery. How very eerie!

Hissy is right - raccoons are very determined & fierce!! Just the other night, JC woke me up - the hens were cackling because coons had somehow brought a hen against the chicken wire and were trying to pull her through. She was quite bloody from the comb, face & neck. The coons were pretty insistent on not letting go - I had to pelt them with dried-up grapefruits
as I keep my rifle & handgun out at my mom's (my hubby's ex-step-son & his friends are teens with a fascination for firearms). I grew up with raccoons coming round at night- they're cute, but EXTREMELY FEROCIOUS; it takes a special dog to tackle one (wolf-hybrids & huskies seem to fare well). They WILL kill kittens, and even cats, for food, although a grown cat seems to be quick enough to avoid them. Also, raccoons seem to ignore "marked territory"; I play a radio outside & have guys mark territory & the coyotes seem to really respect those boundaries, the raccoons couldn't care less.
My neighbor had to shoot 3 raccoons the other morning - they chewed thru stock wire to get at her turkeys. I hope that those coons were part of the pack of 5 that treid to get my hen ( she's healing fine - thank goodness for Neosporin). Both DFG & my vet reminded me that coons carry rabies as well as "cat fever", so keep them away & don't get bit or scratched - if you get bitten, unless you can kill the coon for testing, you'll have to undergo the painful rabies treatment.
For the sake of your sis' family & future kitties, I hope that the mystery is solved soon. Please keep us posted!

I would have to say raccoons as well...but that's my best guess. Raccoons are quite strong and very clever and could very well do something like that...so sad. Keep us posted and hugs to your sister, who must be so sad.

Salem... i know it's a funny question to ask:

but are there people who don't like cats around your sister's area? or people who are into well... cults? [EDIT] i don't want to sound like i'm saying cults are evil and whatnot. that's not my business- i'm just saying fanatical people who feel like there needs to be a sacrifice or something of the sort for rituals.

i just told this story to my boyfriend- he's a terrific cat lover and would go ballistic at the idea of anyone hurting a cat, much less a litter of helpless kittens.

what with the broken chain, nonspooked cats the next morning, your sister and her husband never seeing this animal or hearing it when it does its killing; do you think... people?

i know it's an extremely sick idea, and i'm frightened myself at the idea of ANYONE finding it within themselves to do this to a pack of defenseless kits- but there are some damn sick people out there.

when i told him about suspecting raccoons- he said "raccoons are smart; they're not strong enough to break a chain. mountain lion, maybe". then i told him about that hole in the back of the taxi; he said "no, it's people. it sounds like they put something through that hole first; maybe ether or something to drowse the kittens. what animal has the kind of logic to make a hole in the BACK but pull kittens out from the front? and out of 1x1 holes? it's not possible- human hands did that."

I am horrified by that story!!!! It wasn't your sisters fault though, she shouldn't blame herself...

I have to agree with nakoruru, it sounds like it could be a human.... I would set up video cameras and stay up all night!!!

Keep us posted!

I think human

a racoon wouldn't be able to reach into those holes properly.. I think a 'tool' would have been used

This is a scary thing. When I first read your story, I thought it not possible for it to be coons either. They can't break a chain. And it entered my mind that it could be a person or persons doing this. I would stay up all night long and wait for them, whatever it was. I know that is what my husband would do too.

oh and on another note, if your sister plans to do this:

have some kind of weapon. i'm quite serious. preferably a long range weapon like a gun.

this is because um... well, NORMAL PEOPLE don't do cruelties like that. i don't know how dangerous people (IF it really is, people, which i'm doubting less and less) like that can be. if they can stand ripping a kitten to shreds... i don't know what kinds of things they're capable of doing to humans as well if confronted.

I have a friend that rehabs raccoons- unless it was rabid, a racoon would not be likely to take the time to pull 5 kittens through wire. Once the kittens started screaming or crying, it would most likely run- they're not fighters, they're scavengers! They are quite clever, but that means they're likely to realize there is easier food (and quieter food) elsewhere.

Don't quite know what it could have been. If by some chance it WAS people,
you don't even want to get me started. What an awful story anyhow.....

RIP sweet babies
