I noticed last night my cat Eddie had a very strange wound on his side. It's perfectly round but it's not bleeding or infected. It doesn't seem to bother him and he's acting normal. I'm going to take him to the vet today, but I just wondered if anyone else had seen such a strange wound. It's definately down multiple layers of skin, as when I move it, it looks like you can see muscle underneath.

Is he and inside or outside cat? He may have had a boil that broke open, or is it possible that if he is an outside cat, that some one shot him?

Sounds like an abcess that burst - and he cleaned the wound before you could see all the puss etc...
It has happened to my cats before.

He's mostly indoors but occasionally he goes out into my fenced in back yard. I was thinking along the same line, that maybe it was an abcess that broke. What will the vet do for that? or will it heal on its own.

If it is still 'oozing', the vet will have to drain it and clean it.
You will proberbly be given a antiseptic solution (one that's not harmfull to cats) to continue cleaning it at home.

Abcesses (sp?) heal quite quickly.

Well it's not bleeding or draining anymore so I guess that's good. I'll see what the vet has to say.

Sounds like a puncture wound to me.
Deep ones won't bleed much if at all. Good luck at the vet and let us know what they say.

If it is still open and you can layers of skin or muscle, you may also be getting some antibiotics.

Several yrs ago my senior Ox had a similar wound in in abdomen/side of his body region. If I remember it was the size of a quarter and perfectly round suggesting a bullet but when we took to vet they xrayed and opened him up they could not find anything - no "exit" wound/bullets. They did put a drain in and he had to wear the Elizabethean collar for a couple of weeks. No problems again with that type of injury except he is sensitive if you touch him there.
