Ugh, now I'm hearing that Rita's turned east and is heading straight up to East Texas. Rita, stop following my path home! Is it safer to stay now or leave?! Its likely to be TS Rita when it hits College Station....

In response to your question about what to do with things in your apartment before you leave, I have a suggestion. Last year our complex took it pretty hard and many people were forced to move out because water had poured into their place. Being on the first floor I didn't get it as badly, but we STILL had water damage to our ceiling with lots of staining and our carpets were also drenched to the core. I would suggest taking any pictures or artwork of value off your walls and putting them in a safe container. Something like tupperware or in plastic bags if you can. I would just put away any keepsakes that would be ruined by getting wet. Obviously take any important documentation with you and anything that you might fret over if you were to leave it. If your area is only expected to get tropical storm force winds, your windows should be safe (although you never know, and with the size of this thing it definitely could still be a hurricane when it hits your area). Also, if you have any milk or ice cream - dump it. There's nothing worse than coming back to an apartment and smelling rotten milk or having to clean a freezer that has had melted ice cream all over it...trust me. Just be safe and I hope you get the minimum from this thing!

I'll be praying for you! Good luck riding out the storm! Its not so bad in CS yet, there's still places with gas and I can take a somewhat backroads way to get home so hopefully not too much traffic.

Thanks for the storm prep advice!

Good luck--but I would highly recommend you staying. It will take you all day or even longer to get where you are going. We didn't take any main roads to where we were trying to get and we got stuck for hours. Does your bathroom have windows? If not, stay in there or your hallway until you feel safe it is ok to come out.
Check back in when you can!

Ok, you need to really prepare now for safety. Board up all of your windows with plywood. If you can't, put masking tape on them to keep glass from flying if they break. Arrange any human necessities and cat supplies in the safest place in your house, like the bathroom, preferably one without a window. Put your kitties in there and keep a mattress within reach so that you can use it as shelter from flying objects. Fill the tub with water for washing. Keep plenty of bottled water on hand for drinking. Eat the stuff in the fridge and freezer before the storm, saving the non-perishables for later. Get ice. Stock up on flashlights and batteries. Make sure you have a battery operated radio. Everyone you know who is staying should have the same person to contact who is out of the area. That way, if you lose touch with each other, the one contact person can relay messages.
You probably know all these things, but I want you to stay safe!
My prayers are with you!

I hope your home isn't hurt by this.
But most importantly, I hope you and your babies get out safe!

I don't reccomend staying either. I grew up in FL and was evacuated countless times. Take your cats, anything un-replaceable (heirlooms, expensive jewelry, artwork) and pack em up in your car. Also take with you: insurance papers, passports, any other important pieces of documentation you may need. As for the rest of your stuff, get some burly guy to put plywood on your windows (your landlord is actually probably responsible for that) and take all of your clothes and other stuff you're leaving behind and put them as high up in the apartment as you can--top shelf of a closet, on top of kitchen cabinets. Anything on the floor will be a loss if you get water in your apt. Oh, and take all perishables out of your fridge and freezer so as not to come home to a really smelly house infested with rodents and bugs

Now, GET THE HECK OUTTA THERE! and keep us posted!

Personally at College tation you are like a hundred miles inland. If it was me I would stay. You however need to do whatever you feel is right and I would never dis you for whatever you decided to do.

I think what Caprice is saying is she wants to leave, but there isn't any gas available. Better to be in a structure than in a car if it has to be one or the other.

Good! A few hours before its predicted to hit, make as much coffee as you can and put it in thermoses. You will really enjoy having it once the power goes out!

When is the storm expected to hit? If there is any way you can get gas or transportation out of Houston in time before the storm hits, I would investigate those options. It's supposed to be a doozy of a storm and I just don't think it's safe to stay there if you can, in any way, get out.

I'll be praying for you and your family.

It is suppose to start raining first thing in the morning. I am already feeling the winds pick up when I take Watson out for his walks today. I plan to take him for a wonderful run this evening, because it may be awhile until he can go out for awhile. The storm will make landfall about 1am on Saturday. Not sure if you've been following this thread.
