Hello everyone! I have a 1.5 year old male who needs Lycene to control Conjunctivitis. The vet said to crush up the pill and mix it with wet food. The problem is my cat (Dexter) doesn't like wet food. At best all he will do is lick the food a little. (We've tried 4 different kinds so far.) Otherwise he turns his nose up to it entirely. Any ideas on something I can mix the medicine in with that he can't refuse?
Thanks in advance to all!

Call your vet and ask them to compound it into a liquid that tasts like chicken, beef or fish and show you how to administer it via a siringe!!!

Or better still, get a jar of baby meat, and crush the pill into it and use some water. Then you can syringe that into his mouth. We saved our old Pete when he came down with upper respiratory. We had for force-feed and water him for a week.

I use pill pockets!!! The greatest thing on earth!!! You can get them from a vet or petstore. They are made by Butler. It is a tasty treat that has a hole for the pill. Cta s love them!!!!

Excellent suggestions! Sierra receives daily medication which up until now has been in pill form. She does very well with my just giving it to her orally and she swollows it. Our new Vet will be compounding it into a salmon flavored liquid!

Pixel takes lysine, too, for feline herpes. i get her the gel 'Viralys', because she won't eat wet food, & she's next to impossible to pill! she doesn't like the gel, either, but i'm able to get it down her! you can order it online here if you want. also, the health food store had capsules, which i tried mixing the contents with food - might be easier than crushing the tablets...

My kitty won't eat we food so I mix her Lysine in the liquid from Nutro pouches. Kitties that won't eat wet food will often drink the liqiud from it. The Nutro pouches have enough liquid for 2 doses. Before I used the liquid from the Nutro pouches, I mixed her lysine in the liquid from a can of chicken.

Oliver also refuses wet food! haha... all these suggestions sound like great solutions to your problem - you can also get your vet to teach you how to pill a cat if he absolutely won't accept these other options... it takes a few times to get it perfect, especially if it's a finicky cat, but once you learn the proper hold and technique it goes pretty quickly... I've had to pill Ollie for his upper respiratories, of course he doesnt like it much, but he knows he gets a treat if he cooperates, lol

When giving cats tablets crushed in food or liquid it's important to know that some tablets are not designed to be crushed, this can alter their effectiveness as they can then be absorbed in different parts of the gastro intestinal system. Although i do think lysine is ok. Also when using a syringe to administer liquids please be keep in mind that aspiration is a risk. Never force a syringe into a cats mouth and force the liquid down. The correct way is to insert the syringe from the side of the mouth, facing the front of the mouth, with the animal swallowing. Always administer slowly.

I thought this was important to share this with everyone.
