Hi all,

Some of you will remember me being at my wits end with my kitty that was peeing by the front door. I took him to the vet (after 2 different visits) found out that he had a bladder infection. Well, I am still treating him for it and he was still peeing by the front door. I bought some cat repellent and started spraying the rug and he stopped peeing there (as long as I put repellent on it every 3 days).
This morning I noticed that he has peed in the "cat room" on the rug in there!!!!!!

PLEASE someone PLEASE tell me what the heck I am to do!! I cannot deal with this. I love my kitties, but I am going to go insane if this peeing doesn't stop. We want to get new carpet and I am terrified to get it because of my cats. My husband is now ready to get rid of all 3 of them. I love them very much but we just can't have this going on. We have a 2 year old and a 3 month old that we babysit for and we just found out that we are going to have a baby in May.

I have Feliway plugs, I have treated with enzymatic cleaners (about $65 worth) I have bought new rugs and runners, added more litterboxes (we now have 6) I have taken EVERYONE to the vet twice now. WHAT IN THE WORLD IS LEFT TO DO???????????????????????????????????????????????

I can completely understand your frustration. Just so that I am clear....have you had your cat re-checked to make sure the infection was cleared up by the medication? I ask because sometimes it takes a full month of antibiotics to beat a bad infection. If the infection is still there, the inappropriate urination will continue.

Next, make sure you do not buy any rugs with rubber backing and do not buy wool rugs. The rubber backing attracts peeing in some cats and wool will never lose the smell once peed upon (even if well treated).

My best advice (though you and your hubby won't like it) is to get rid of all rugs and put down hardwood or laminate flooring instead. This is a great cure for this undesired behavior!

It's probable that the poor cats STILL has a bladder infection or a UTI. perhaps crystals. If a cat has owchie pee, then they associate it withthe box and go elsewhere. Also, you may have cleaned up the urine, but trust- unless you use an enzymatic cleaner, you're not cleaning up the pee, and the cat will continue to pee there, rather than the box.

We go for the recheck on the bladder infection on Friday morning. We have hardwood floors and our rugs are carpet remnants that we had bound, so there is no rubber backing on them. Also we have treated and treated and RETREATED with two different ENZYMATIC cleaners.

We have one room in the house that has actual installed carpet and he has never done anything in that room. (although now that I said that he probably will!)

The vet suggests confining the cat to one area to discourage the behavior. We have an open concept house and the only room I could confine him to is the carpeted one (NOT HAPPENING!) So, I am wondering about buying a kennel (like they use at the shelter) and putting him in that. I don't know how long I would have to confine him to get him to change, though. I don't want to keep him caged too long, as I think that is mean..isn't it?

I am so sad about this cat doing this. We have had him for about 4 years now with no trouble and now this...I can't have a new baby come into a home that is soaked in cat pee. I can't put him outside because he is a very scared cat and he gets hurt very easy. (He used go in and out until we moved in here and he got hurt bad about 3 years ago).

I feel sick about this whole mess and I sure don't understand what to do about it. I will take him to the vet on Friday to see if the infection is cleared up. If it is, my husband will most likely want me to take him to the no-kill shelter unless I can get the peeing to stop.

Please any input would help!

Our rule at our clinic for urinary infections, is three times and it's x-ray time! We conservatively treat with antibiotics the first two times, but if it's recurring and you've treated for a while now, I would suggest you ask your vet to do some bladder x-rays to check for stones.

If the urine test comes back ok, should I still request an X-ray?

Start by letting him out only while supervised (play time, cuddle time, feeding time), but confine him as long as needed while gradually lengthening the amount of time he is loose.

I have had complete retraining take as long as three weeks.

It wouldn't hurt. If a cat has blood in the urine due to stones, it's because the stones can cause little scratches or irritation in the bladder and urethra. If you put the kitty on antibiotics, it somewhat heals those scratches/irritation, and the blood goes away until the antibiotics are gone, or shortly after. There may not be any positive results in the urinalysis at THAT time, but that doesn't mean the stones aren't still there. See what they say, but if it were me, I'd get it done, before your kitty blocks and has to be unblocked or eventually have surgery, which is costly.
At very least, you'll have piece of mind that it isn't stones.

I will get the x-rays. thanks for the input, I appreciate it! I am going to go to Petsmart tomorrow and see if I can find one of those cat cages too. If they don't have one I will order one.

Thanks,

What are you feeding him? Since my cat has been put on Waltham's SO food for cats with urinary problems, he stopped peeing all over the house.

He eats PurinaOne Healthy weight manangement. We have had some weight issues here. We did have them on Iams weight management but they prefer the PurinaOne.

He probably needs to be on special food for urinary problems. I don't know what they put in Waltham's So, but since my cat Scaredy got on it, he is peeing normally in his litterbox, and not all over my place. Scaredy had cystitis and would pee everwhere. Poor thing even peed all over vets when I took him there.
I am surprised your vet didn't tell you to put your cat on special food for urinary problems. But if he didn't, I think you should definetly ask about Walham's.

I will ask the vet about the food. Is the Walthams very expensive? I have to be cautious of the price as we have 3 cats, 3 birds and 2 dogs and now that we are expecting a baby money is kinda tight. (we don't have the best health insurance)

Thanks!

I pay 15 $ for 5.5 lb bag. They also have canned, but my cat doesn't like it.

I am glad to hear that someone else is as frustrated as me.
My Spencer is spending part time in a big dog crate like the one shown.
In the mornings I take him out and put him in the "cat room" until he pees...
He stays out until I go to work...then I put him back in the crate while we are gone. My next step is to try and put him back in the cat room when we come home. Right now I am just letting him run....then he goes in the dog litter pan, which is fine until he misses or poops and the dog gets it as a treat! ugh!

Anyway, I feel your frustration and pain. Unfortunately they can't find anything wrong with mine...his is strictly behavioral.

Well we went to the vet this morning and the other kitty is not sick at all. (Had her checked to be safe) but Smokey the resident urinator is STILL sick. We have 30 more days of a new antibiotic and we will go back in 30 days for a recheck.. If he is still sick then, they will do a bladder x-ray. I have bought uninary health food for him as well.

I feel better knowing that this is from illness not Smokey just being a jerk!

The vet has recommended that Smokey be confined to a cage or a bathroom for 4-6 weeks to retrain him from doing this behavior. She says to put him in a cage that has room for a litterbox and his food, so I am going to try to buy one of those cages like has been recommended here.

Thanks everyone and I will keep posted about how he is doing. Boy cats sure do keep us hopping!!! (I guess that's why we love them

Smokey is now eating PurinaOne Urinary Health. He is STILL peeing on the floor and it is NOW getting WORSE. He was peeing on the floor once a day and now is up to 4 times a day.

He is on his second round of antibiotics and has 10 days to go for it to be 60 days on 2 different kinds. My husband said again this morning (after cleaning up a deluge of urine off of our wood floors) that he wants him gone. He told me to take him to the shelter today. I said I can't do that especially since the cat is sick.

I am stressing out because I don't have the money to go buy a cage to put him in right now, and we have been locking him in a room and that is where he is peeing everywhere.

I am 2 1/2 months pregnant and DO NOT NEED THIS!!!!!!!! This cat is peeing all over the room that is supposed to become our new baby's room!!!!!!!!!!

I just do not know what to do about all of this. I know I made a committment to this cat when I found him, but for cying out loud how much can a person take????? If I was an uncaring, unprincipled person I'd just take him to the shelter today. But I feel that I can't do that. I just don't know what to do with him!!

We have a dog crate that our lab is trained to and I was wondering if I could put him in that?

I just don't know what to do! He is my hubby's cat and he just wants to get rid of him today.....

Any input would be great here

OK, I know this litter is expensive, but I would suggest trying "Cat Attract" kitty litter. I use it because of the low dust, but I suggested it to my hair dresser & it worked like a charm for her cat. I'm not sure if it will work with a cat with at UTI, but it's worth a try.
