My mom just got my Dad a 6 week old male kitten and I am wondering what food he should be fed to avoid future urinary health problems common to males. I only have experience with female cats so advise for this little guy would be much appreciated. Thanks

I would suggest that you ask the vet. I am going through alot of issues with my cat blocking. My vet has my cat on hills cd food. The only thing about this is you need a prescription. I strongly recommend not feeding him stuff from the grocery store like friskies. I was feeding my cat Science Diet for ten years and one night I ran out of food so I ran to the grocery store, since Science Diet is only sold at vets and petmarts,so I just grabbed the best I thought. He was eating it and he wasn't throwing it up so I figured it was ok to let him finish the bag. Also it was way cheaper, a $9 difference. So for me who doesn't have alot of money that was a huge difference. Before I got to finish the last of the bag I was rushing my cat to the ER. I can't be positive that is what caused the blockage but he was fine and never had problems before that. So my saving $9 ended up costing me over $3000 in the ER. It may have also cost me my best friend because he is still not out of the clear. If he blocks again I don't have another $3000 to put him back in the hospital. So I recommend spending the money on the better stuff. I don't want your family to go through what I am right now. Good luck with the kitty.

I agree with Samurai's mom, previous post. The cost of the cat food is well worth what you save in vet bills. Both my cats eat Hills prescription food from the vet because of urinary problems.

Yes, you definitley want to get a better food. You probably won't be able to get prescription food for this at your vet, until he needs it, if he ever does. But, staying with a better pet store food is the best way to keep the bladder balance. Using bottled water may help too.
