How often do you scoop your litterboxes?

We say "Gifts" in our house...

I scoop 1-2 times a day, depending on frequency and potency of gifts - and complete detox never goes over a fortnight.

I scoop once or twice a day and clean the litter box/add a new bag of litter once a week.

I scoop once per day at least and change the whole litter box and clean the pan about every 4 weeks. We use WBCL and we don't have an odour problem. We also have covered boxes which I think helps.

I don't think you need to do a complete change if there is not an odor problem. I think that's what matters, not whether you know better or not. Especially if you're using bacterial control litter, there shouldn't be a problem if there's no odor. You've been lucky not to have to do it. If the litter is deep enough and you clean it often, the remaining litter may not have to be changed ever!

I alwys just add more!
I have to admit -- I'm pretty bad about this too. I probably get to it once every 1-2 months.

It doesn't matter how deep I have the litter. My two boys would dig to China to get to the bottom so they can urinate there. So I quickly learned not to make the litter so deep. I have four boxes for three cats. I use about 14 pounds of scoopable litter per box, so it starts out about two inches deep. I don't add more, but thoroughly scoop three times a day or more. (Red Cat will not use a box that's not been cleaned of almost every speck of dirty litter and since the boys' urine balls always break up from doing it on the bottom, that is not an easy chore!) Then I do a complete change and wash the boxes every one to two weeks.

I was talking with some people online, from a dog sim.. and somehow the topic of litterboxes came up.. and the one persn said that their box smelt bad. and I asked how often she scooped it. and she told me once a week.

How can a cat go in a box that isn't scooped at least once a day?
I would think that it would be gross and smelly.

so am I the weird one scooping my boxes multiple times a day?

well, i have to say my cat raven sure wouldn't! that's just gross.
raven had me trained shortly after i got raven and nabu (littermates). i got them as adults, and raven expects his box scooped at last once a day. he won't pee outside of it, but he poops outside of it when it is not up to standards. (hasn't done that in a loooong time)

i scoop the boxes anywhere from 1-3 times a day. i have 4 boxes with 3 cats so that helps too. we use clumping litter, and completely dump and scrub every 2-4 weeks depending on the condition of the litter.
this system makes for happy cats.

Wow! They went a week without scooping and wondered why the box smelled bad?!

I scoop a minimun of twice a day (1 box, 2 cats). More if I'm home and the cats do a stinky while I'm there.
I completely change the litter every month. I once neglected to change the litter soon enough. Wiggies let us know by doing a great big dump on the bathroom mat while my husband looked on in horror!

Scoop just once a WEEK? HORRORS! Did you ask her how she would react if her family toilet only got flushed once a week?

Red Cat is a clean freak and if one doesn't get every last little speck of soiled litter out, he will yell "CLEAN IT" in his very BIG voice until I do so. I follow orders when I'm home because I'm the nervous type and can't tolerate his yelling at me. Also, he's got his own psychological problems, and I don't like to upset him more than necessary. So with four boxes for three cats, I often scoop them all three times a day. Complete litter change and wash box every one to two weeks.

If I didn't scrub out my litter pans twice a week, I would have an epidemic of ticked off kittens and cats that would be baptizing every corner of my house.

It is important to maintain strict standards when it comes to your litter pans, because A) They are made of plastic. (B) Plastic harbors bacteria when damaged and C) Cat's scratch up the plastic and that's where the bacteria lurks. Just dumping new litter on top of old- even if well-scooped, will send a sensory message to your cat to avoid that spot because it smells bad.

Cats are very fastidious creatures, and they are scent-driven. There is no way that not changing your litter for months at a time is acceptable or healthy for your cats.

Thanks for verifying this in my head, Hissy! I was thinking the same thing, but my expertise is much more limited than yours! I do know, however, that Sophie would be one mad little critter if that litter box wasn't scrubbed out at least once a week. She can't wait to jump in it as soon as I'm done and dirty it all up again!

I use a very fine (sand-like) clumping litter, and scoop once or twice a day (every morning without fail, and again when I get home from work weekdays). I use litter pan liners. Once a week, I sieve the litter, steam clean the box, put in a new liner, put the sieved litter back in towards the back, and fresh litter in the front. Every two to four weeks I completely replace the litter. I used to replace it every week, until a friend pointed out that I was "wasting" litter and burdening the environment. If I use coarser clumping litter for whatever reason, I dump it once or twice a week, and naturally steam clean the box before putting in new litter.

Let's see.....12 litterboxes, 2 times per day.
That's 24 times 7 days in the week.
That's 168 times 52 weeks.
I'm starting to get dizzy here...... 8,736 scoop outs per year.
