Well, this aught to be a fairly easy question to answer - or at least I hope.

My boyfriend and I have had our big baby Riddley for 4 years now and we've always clipped his claws on a fairly regular basis.

For some reason, the other day we were clipping his claws and we were scared to clip 2 of them because the dark part in the nail was to the end of the claw. Now, as far as we know, that's the quick. Now we don't know what to do as those 2 claws are fairly long and they are starting to make a noise when he walks.

We really don't want to hurt our cat, but we really don't know what our options are. Should we just clip? Is there really something to worry about? Or would we be best off bringing him to a vets and have them clip him this one time?

The way a nail is structured, it's not possible in a normal nail for the quick to extend all the way to the tip. Is this darker than normal? I'm wondering if you're seeing some discoloration in the nail, or maybe the result of an injury. It just doesn't sound normal to me. Is it worth bringing it to the vet? I don't know. I suppose you can take a chance and clip it. It that was the wrong thing to do, then you end up bringing him to the vet anyway. Judgment call, I guess.

Festus has some black claws, and I just guess where to clip, by going the same as on the light colored claws. Maybe more color is showing from them growing longer, but the quick isn't any longer. Clip away!
