Hi, was wondering if there is any advance warning when a cat is going to go into heat? Tia is just five months and still to my eyes anyway very small. I am planning to have her spayed but would like to wait until she is a little bit bigger. I have always had either Toms(neutered) or previously neutered females so I am a bit in the dark on what to watch for if there are any "early warning" signs. I know that they roll and call, other than that I am in the dark....info please? Thanks alot.

age is a good indicator and she looks like could at any time. Also note that some cats (very few) but some cats have what they call a silent heat. Why wait -it's better they never have to go into heat - and don't worry she'll be just fine. Now a days they even neuter/spay at an very early age with no side effects.

Carol if it helps, Mika is also very small and delicate too (she was the runt). She was born July 2 and spayed first week of December so essentially 5 months as well.

How much does Tia weigh right now? I can check at home tonight to be sure but I think Mika was under 7 lbs when she was done.

I am not sure Linda, as far as I can tell by MY bathroom scale she is around 5 pounds but I am not sure it's accurate and my "wonderful" vet didn't bother to weigh her when I got her shots last week
. She had a checkup supposedly but he didn't weigh her, too anxious to get finished so they could close..

I just had one of my female foster cats done last week and she was only 4lbs. Everything went just fine.

Our vet does "pediatric spays" at 3lbs. The sooner the better; every time she goes into heat increases her chance of certain types of cancers and infections. I know the surgery is a scary thought, but your little girl will do just fine!

Bring her back to Canada and come visit!
Our vet already loves Tia and would love a visit from her!

Just to warn you.

My cat first got VERY affectionate - always wanted to be petted - for about a day. The next day she would start pushing her tail end up when you petted. Then she would roll around and be very cute. The best was the little "tribble" (Star Trek reference) sound she made. Oh, then there's the "wailing." LOL
