I leave my computer on all the time... Is that really bad? Is it actually costing me more to leave it on?

I don't know about cost but I have been told that if you have broadband, it is best for your computer's security, to turn it off when you are not going to use if for awhile. I always turn mine off at bedtime or if I am not going to be home.
I would like to know what others do too.

I turn it off at night when I go to bed and turn it back on in the morning.

Mine is, i heard that you shouldnt leave it on all day with broadband because of hackers ect. But i do anyway, and no if you just bought your computer in the last few years it should be energy safe.

Work computer is on 24-7. Home computer is on all the time on the weekends, but during the week I turn it off when I go to bed. No point in leaving it on when I'm going to sleep for 7-8 hours and then work for 9 hours.

I don't leave mine on during the week. I turn it on when I get home after work, and turn it off before I go to bed. On the weekends however, I tend to turn it on when I get up and don't turn it off until bedtime.

Now it's a different story for my computer at work, that one is left on 24/7!!

I haven't turned mine off in YEARS!! My son's PC is also on 24/7. It is healthier for the PC to keep it on than to shut it down & start it up. Rebooting/restarting is a different story. That must be done for your PC to recognize any new updates/programs installed. Sorry...sounding a bit nerdy there

I turn mine off a night and back on in the morning, during the day when I'm not using it it's on standby to save juice.

Sunny powers them up when he gets up in the morning, and we shut them down at night when we go to bed. So I s'pose they're up for 12/7 ... more or less so to speak.

I used to but then i got into trying to cut back on stuff and by leaving your PC on all day and all night it just burns energy....so i leave it on in the evenings but turn it off at night and during the day while i'm at work.

Our electric bill is the same whether we turn off the computer at night or not. Lately we have been leaving it on 24/7 for downloading.

Hmm, my teach at work would argue with you on that point. The only computers we have had trouble with in terms of hard drives crashing were those that were left on 24/7.

As for mine personally, I see no need to keep it running and using power when I am not using it. It definitely goes off at night.

I leave it on all the time. I don't even remember the last time--oh yeah, when I moved my desk. That was earlier this year! I reboot it when it has updates or I install/uninstall something but that's about it.
