A few days ago, I found an obviously deserted newborn kitten lying in the parking lot where I work. Now, I don't know much about raising animals, but I couldn't leave the poor thing there, so I took it over to petco and got her some formula and learned about the basics. Two days ago I went and picked up some of that antibiotic stuff to replace the mother's natural nutrients.

The problem is that his poo has becoming increasingly less "formed" in the past couple days, and yesterday it was definitely diarrhea. The kitten has also developed about three large pimples, one near her groin, one on the inside of her back knee, and another right on top of her head. I don't know if these things are related, it's possible we're overfeeding and undercleaning her, though I don't feel as though we are. Any ideas?

Newborns that are abandoned should be on KMR (mother's milk replacer), bottle-fed every 2-hours around the clock. As the little one gets older, you can feed every 4-hours...around the clock. He should turn his head a bit when full...you don't want to overfeed them...can cause diarrhea.

Not sure what the "antiobiotic stuff" is that you are referring to.

Are his eyes still closed?

As far as the "pimples" are concerned, has anyone checked for fleas?

I would wonder if they are ticks and not fleas? Or perhaps a fly strike. I would certainly get the little one to a vet today if possible and if not today then by tomorrow morning. I can't think of the name of the fly that buries into the flesh at different points, but they are found on stray kittens, horses and feral dogs.

www.kitten-rescue.com was set up to help people such as yourself know what to do-

Welcome to TCS...thank you for caring for this little one. In addition to the advice you have already received...I would have him checked over by a vet just to make sure he is healthy. Mom cats do not naturally abandon their young unless they are sick...and although the mom may have been killed or went into hiding and left this little one behind..it's best to be on the safe side.

we are feeding him every couple of hours, which is making me a bit sleepy everyday! :-) it could be overfeeding, I've been noticing and she will tend to eat more than the recommended 1-7mL in one sitting, like, once I believe she finished off about 10mL, so we have to watch for that. She hasn't been looked at for fleas, so I guess this could be a problem. We thought it was a dirty thing since the first two were near her "region". But the one on the top of her head has us stumped. Her eyes are still closed, yes.

Aw, you are a wonderful person for taking in this poor baby!

I don't have any advice other than it would definitely be a good idea to have the kitten looked at by your vet asap. I don't want to scare you, but dehydration (a worry with diarrhea) can kill a kittens pretty quickly. Either way, it's always better for a vet to make sure everything is ok and they can give you good advice on care, feeding, etc.

At such a young age, your little one should really be seen by a vet. Being so young, he could develop anemia from the fleas. Also, at that age, a professional should really administer flea medication...you don't won't to over-medicate.

Hope all goes well with your newborn.
