I'm beginning to be a Himalayan breeder. I've had one litter with a boy that sprays and I'm going to be selling him to someone who can accomodate that better than I. I've got mom, two other female kittens and just purchased a wonderful boy kitten. I wanted to raise them up all together and hope that he doesn't spray (his dad doesn't) But I've recently heard that if they live like 'brother and sister' they won't tend to mate....as if I may need to keep them separated...any thoughts? Thanks!

You have to keep them separated when the girls are in heat. Cats have no feelings for brothers or sisters when it comes to mating.

What Anne said. Animals do not see mating like people. It is instinct and natural to them. They do not have moral codes, and brother and sister and such. They do have to be seperated when they are in heat unless your planning the litter.

I've never seen a male be picky on who he gets jiggy with, so I wouldn't worry about raising them together. But be sure that you get the last male's smell out of the house before getting a new boy, otherwise he has a 90% chance to spray as well. Also, the females might spray if he doesn't (as it is in my house, the girls spray and the boy calls).

Isn't that the reason to NOT keep them together?? You don't want the brother and sister mating, doesn't matter that he doesn't care who he mated with, you should.

As I've understood it, the male aren't the females' brother. It's just that they'll be raised "as brothers and sisters".

meowhouse: Most males will breed females he's been raised with. Sometimes (not very often though) a male won't breed a dominant female, but that can happen even if he hasn't been raised with the female.

Raise them together if that's what you feel suits you and the cats the best (I surely think that's the best for everyone as long as the cats aren't closely related).

Keeep them seperated if you don't want them to breed. The female does not have to go into heat to get pregnant as cats are induced ovulators.

I don't think it matters how they were raised. The hormones/natural instinct will kick in eventually and they will mate weather or not they are actually brother and sister or if they were raised/live like brother and sister.

Excuse me, but did you even read this post before making this rude comment at me? The first post says (from my understanding) that she adopted a mom, her two female kittens, and got a seperate male kitten. And even if they are all related, I said raise them together as kittens, not breed them together! You're the one mistaken at the context of what I said, so I would apprechiate if you pay attention before talking down to others who have been breeding for over 10 years and a vet tech for a number of years on top of that (especially since I've been one of only a handful of Mau people that strive endlessly NOT to inbreed!) - I'm not just some fool with a pipe dream.

If the male is completely isolated from the others as a kitten, he will have social and territorial issues, so it is extremely important that the male learns how to interact with other animals before he's 8 months old.

I would raise them together until a certain age 8 months or something, but then seperate your male. Since you are getting rid of one male that sprays, what happens if this boy starts spraying? Will he get flicked off too?

I think you will be fine. You might as well keep them together until you breed them, because they will tend to get along better.

Again with the bashing each other. You should read the post carefully before replying rudely to someone. In fact, you shouldn't reply rudely at all.
