Can a cat get over a cold without antibiotics?

It depends on how severe the cold is Deb. Plus if you have more than one cat you risk the chance of your healthy cat getting ill from your sick one. You can use GSE in their water, but you should try conventional antibiotics first-

Probably, but ... I always wonder how effective antibiotics are against viruses, because I've always understood they're not, but I may have to rethink that. Jamie was really sick last week (vomiting/diarrhea), and my vet gave him antibiotic and antispasmodic shots, which cleared it up within 24 hours. The blood tests revealed that he had human influenza virus, as my vet suspected, as it's going around again here. My next-door neighbor told me today that their dog (Jamie's best buddy) also has it. I kept Jamie inside this week, so Aki may have gotten it from human contact, too. Their vet also administered antibiotic shots.

Oh my gosh...I did not know that cats could catch a human flu.
How did your vet test for it?

I took in a stool sample so she could test for bacteria/parasites, but she drew blood and specifically asked the lab that it be tested for influenza, because she'd had a couple of sick feline patients whose human family members had been ill with flu-like symptoms. Apparently our pets can catch our illnesses fairly easily.
