Vet Question for kitten

Ok I called the vets office to make the appt for our kitten when she comes home next week. The first time I called the lady told me to bring in Ms. Kitty on October 3rd to get fixed and have her shots. I asked about any testing?? She said just bring in some stool. Ok I hang up and I look at my calendar and the 3rd Ms. Kitty will only be 7 weeks.....too early, so I called back and this other lady tells me that yes that was too early so we rescheduled when she will be 10 weeks because that was the next available?? Anyhow the question is.....when I first called this office about 2 weeks ago about prices for getting her fixed they told me she would get three sets of shots and it would be $11 and then this lady told me today that she would get rabies and it would be $18.......Ok the moneys not a huge biggy but I need to know WHAT shots should she be getting this first time? I know she goes back three times in all for a series of shots, but I just dont know what?
Also what all should I be having them test her for? I know they are doing something since they need stool, worms??? anyhow I just want to know. I would think they know what they are doing but I want to know what they should be doing??
Thanks so much
Liz

Hi Liz,
welcome to the site. =) Your kitten will only be 6 weeks old when you get it?
That's about how old Mazee was when she was rescused from a barn too.

The stool sample will check various worms and parasites. Did the lady mention if you will have to pay for that as well? I live about an hour south of you and my vet charges about $13 for that.

During the exam, they will check her ears for mites- look like coffee grounds.

But it's worth it and please get any worm medicine/other medicine from the vet not over the counter. Alot of over the counter products are not good for kittens, cats, puppies or dogs.

They will probably recommend doing a feline leukemia test which was around $28 in my area. If it's negative... the booster was $15.

Also if she is sneezing, has watery or crusty eyes... please do not wait until her spay apointment to get her seen. Being so little, it could be a cold, flu, or
feline chlamydia (eye infection).

You may also want to read about the dangers of Hartz products.

Good luck with your kitten! =)

Thank you so much for that info. I have Hartz shampoo for her I think...Im going to have to go recheck. Im not going to use any over the counter stuff for her. Ill ask the vet if she needs anything. I feel safer that way. Ive also been doing some heavy research about the declawing......we are now leaning towards NOT declawing. I just cant stand to see her go through that and the getting her fixed is bad enough. Poor baby.
Ok this vet mentioned none of the tests or ear mites....**sigh** I think mainly because its a low cost place that unless you ask for it they dont do it?? I dont know but I will be calling back once we get the kitty and ask them about these other things.
Thanks again

You're welcome, Liz. =)

There was also another product called biospot....

I hope Sunnicat will not mind posting the link to her thread here for you to read when you have time. http://www.thecatsite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=58253

It sounds like she is going to have alot of fun and plenty of love when she does finally arrive. =)

For ear mites, they just look in the ears, I think. You would see it yourself, it looks like cat has coffee grounds in the ears. The tests for Felv and Fiv you ususally have to ask for. Your kitten will be very young. Where are you getting her from? It's better they stay with their mother longer.

That is so sad about the Biospot....sick actually knowing it can kill cats.
Anyhow thanks for the information.
Elizwithcat.....thanks for the ear mites info. I am finding out with this vet that I do have to ask them to do the specific tests. I just though they would do them manditory but apparently not. As for her being young.......yep. I know that people suggest them staying with their moms longer but the owner wants her to go at 6 weeks and Im Ok with that. The kitten is about 1 hour away from us and shes a barn cat right now but I know they go out and play with her and love on her and the owner has litter box trained her. When I say barn cat I should clarify....its a "nice" barn..heated and very nice almost like inside of a house. The mom cat is and inside (barn) outside cat. They want the kittens to go at 6 weeks and like I said Im Ok with that. It would be nice if she could stay with mom longer but its not to be. Ive asked them to put a washcloth in with the mommy cat so that we can bring it home with us with the moms smell on it. I know it wont be the same as what mom could teach her but shed still have the scent in an unfamiliar area.
Thanks again for all the insight.

I'm not sure where you are getting your kitten from-I got Bakker last yr and my vet also tested for Ringworm-but only needs testing if there are symptoms.

Yes, if she is an outdoor kitten/cat, there is more of a risk of her coming home with ear mites and things like that.
Worms is a given. They will always test for that.
And yes, ask for a feline leukemia test too. There it may be cheaper than here (as someone mentioned it was $28). Here it was $63. gulp. But worth every penny!

Ok thanks.

Here it is around $11 for the regular shots and then $9 for the rabies so $18 sounds about right for a set of immunizations with rabies. Some places it is quite a bit more costly.
