When you take your kits into the vet for a problem, do they normally charge you for the follow up visit? I mean, I understand if when you go to that follow up visit you have to get new meds or a shot or a procedure/test, but just to look at the animal and say, they look better? My mom took Tiffany, her poodle, to the vet a few weeks ago and then she took her in for her follow up visit last week. She said they charged her a $28 office visit, and they hardly touched her. She was fuming. What does your vets do?

When I actually paid for vet services, I was never charged follow-up fees.
Not even for my expensive board certified Avian vet.

I have been charged for follow-up visits when I didn't think I should have been. And also have not been charged for follow-up visits, so I couldn't tell you what my vet's normal practices are! I do know that check-ups are like $35? Too much. I'm about to change the boys' vet, although I may keep my present one for my Peke.

I've always been charged for all visits even follow ups. Usually only $30-40 unless they have to do extra tests.

Sorry to say, but yes, my vet charges for the follow up visit. I have two cats and when I take them together, he usually charges only one office visit fee. But he has always charged for office visits, even follow up ones.

Where I work we usually charge for rechecks. Prices depend on how long it was since the first visit. 2-3 day recheck is something like $14 or $15 and 4 - 7 days is like $28. Depending on what it was.. sometimes we don't charge. If it's something like a drain removal or staple/suture removal we don't charge.

I have always been charged too. That is why they ususally just have me call them and then if anything sounds out of the ordinary, I will take her back in. It is dumb, if they are going to charge, they should at least do half price for a follow up, especially if they dont really do anything.

I think it also can depend on how much "business" you do with your vet. Since we breed bengals and have 12 adult cats and various numbers of kittens at any given time, we probably see our vet more than say someone who owns just one cat or dog.
Our vet generally gives us a break on all her services. I do however remember a long time ago when we only had one cat, that we would get charged for follow-ups and all sorts of other things I thought were questionable. (different vet)

If the follow up is necessary for the procedure, my vet doesn't charge extra. Rather, she builds that cost into the bill for the procedure, to be sure that people do the follow up. I think she's entitled to be paid for her time, and wouldn't fuss about a small fee, but she doesn't bill extra. For example, for Bailey's spay, the follow up to check the incision and remove the sutures was all included in the fee.

And once with each cat, I've taken them in for their shots, and found that they had something else wrong, and she didn't want to stress them with the vaccinations on top of that. She didn't charge me for those visits either. Sam just needed time to feel better, and Bailey needed medication, but all I paid for was the prescription.

Oh, and as for the original question, I don't think my vet would charge in that case.

My vet charges a "recheck" fee. Normal office call is $16, and a recheck is $8. Stitch removal is free and you don't need an appointment. When I had horses, one of my horses was sick and needed some more antibiotics. I called the vet (same vet), and he dropped them off, and only charged me a $6 drop off fee (his office is a half hour away, and a regular farm call is $28). Yeah, I think I have the most affordable vet in the world. His prices seem to run about half of what other vets charge, and he's VERY good, I've always been happy with whatever he's done, and he handles my animals very well, even my psycho mare that always tried to kick him, and my psycho kitty that always tries to bite and/or claw him!

Yes, I am always charged for follow up visits. I was even charged for consultation, when I didn't bring the cat in, but just talked to the vet.

Dori's old vet didn't charge for a follow up spay/neuter exam if it was needed. But they did charge for follow ups on visits other than that. Their exam fees were $35.
Dori's new vet, however, charges $10 for an office visit and nothing for a follow up. I brought her in for a follow up exam once a month after the initial visit and they didn't charge me a dime. They are great

The suture re-check for Bella's spay was included in the fee that the Humane Society paid (or didn't pay, as it's the college's teaching animal hospital).

My vet donates the first well-kitten exam for adopted pets (although only those with a voucher from the Humane Society... rescues don't count), and I don't know his policy (yet) about re-checks. Would you consider the second and third round of vaccines followup? If so, he does charge each time for the exam he does before giving the shot. I can't wait until the two of them are done with that. Bella needed two boosters when I adopted her, and Rowan obviously needed three. And then the rabies shots start, but those can be given at the same time as the last round of shots for both of them, I'm hoping.

My vet charges about 20 bucks or so for a recheck. I think the last vet did too, about 10 bucks cheaper than a plain old physical exam.
The new vet seemed pretty reasonable. Rocky was hospitalized last month due to a asthma attack and recieved oxygen, a x-ray, antibiotics for a slight UTI and stayed overnight. It was only 200 bucks and I was braced for more. They are also an emergency hospital.

Sometimes we've been charged, sometimes not. Our girls have had to go in several times this year and I think they've taken mercy on me on a few trips.
