Hi there, I'm new to the site and have a female cat named Jess. She had kittens on Tues the 6th Sep, they are 8 days old as i type this. I was just wondering if they should be 'poo-ing' yet? I clean their bedding every other day as Jess is a first time mummy and was nervous about people going near her babies. As of yet i have never seen any mess on the bedding....is this right??

Hi,
my cat had her kittens on the 7th so are a day younger than yours. they will be able to go toilet on their own from around 24th september so yours will be roughly around then. however her kitten from her last litter didnt actually use the litter tray til he was around 4 and a half weeks old as mum was still helping him go. so dont worry if yours dont start going on their own as long as they are going thats all that matters.

A good momcat will keep her kittens clean by licking them and ingesting the poo. So don't worry if you don't see any.

Right now your mom is probably licking your kittens to stimulate them to go potty and as Jenny stated..she will eat their poo...for now. In a few weeks, when they are learning to poop and pee on their own (without assistance from mom) you probably will find some accidents. Also, I do hope you are keeping mom cat indoors for now and plan to have her spayed once the kittens are weaned from her.

I have already called vets and informed them that Jess will be in to be spayed as soon as kittens have weaned. It was only my own naiveity(sp) that caused her to fall in the first place as i kept putting it off....I've realised this adn i'm paying for it. Luckily i know of many cat lovers looking for a litten...tho this is no excuse...the babies are going to loving homes.

ghirl...what is done is done and believe me, you aren't alone. I had a friend who found herself in a similiar situation..but unlike you, her cat kept getting out and in the end she had 6 litters of kittens before she was spayed. I want to commend you for doing the responsible thing for your cat and setting her up to be spayed once her kittens are weaned (definately keep her indoors so she doesn't have a chance to sneak out and become pregnant again during this time). I'm sure you will find appropriate homes for all her kittens.
If you have any additional questions, feel free to pose them here. This forum was specifically set up to help people like yourself.

I let my Baby Girl go to a friend's house when I "thought" she was no longer in heat. Oops. So she had a litter of three. Boy was I surprised when they got 8 weeks old and I couldn't stand to let any of them go. But I did get momma spayed as soon as I could, then the boy kitten when he was old enough, then the girls when I could afford to afterward. So I messed up, but I sure do love my kitties.
And I did get them all fixed in an effort to be responsible now.

Denise, congrats on your healthy babies. Be sure to let the new owners know that you want the babies spayed and neutered, too, when they get old enough. If all the catlovers get together and support each other in this effort to spay and neuter, we can end the cycle of over population.
