Here is the story.

TWO secretaries at one of Sydney's top law firms have been sacked after a catty email exchange that was circulated around the city's legal and financial district.

Here is the email:
KATRINA NUGENT 9.39am: Yesterday I put my lunch in the fridge on Level 19 which included a packet of ham, some cheese slices and two slices of bread which was going to be for my lunch today. Over night it has gone missing and as I have no spare money to buy another lunch today, I would appreciate being reimbursed for it.

MELINDA BIRD 9.55: Katrina, There are items fitting your exact description in the level 20 fridge. Are you sure you didn't place your lunch in the wrong fridge yesterday?

KATRINA NUGENT 10.06: Melinda, probably best you don't reply to all next time, would be annoyed to the lawyers. The kitchen was not doing dinner last night, so obviously someone has helped themselves to my lunch. Really sweet of you to investigate for me!

MELINDA BIRD 10.14: Katrina, since I used to be a float and am still on the level 19 email list I couldn't help but receive your ridiculous email - lucky me! You use our kitchen all the time for some unknown reason and I saw the items you mentioned in the fridge so naturally thought you may have placed them in the wrong fridge. Thanks I know I'm sweet and I only had your best interests at heart. Now as you would say, "BYE"!

KATRINA NUGENT 10.15: I'm not blonde!!!

MELINDA BIRD 10.16: Being a brunette doesn't mean you're smart though!

KATRINA NUGENT 10.17: I definitely wouldn't trade places with you for "the world"!

MELINDA BIRD 10.19: I wouldn't trade places with you for the world... I don't want your figure!

KATRINA NUGENT 10.21: Let's not get person (sic) "Miss Can't Keep A Boyfriend". I am in a happy relationship, have a beautiful apartment, brand new car, high pay job...say no more!!

MELINDA BIRD 10.23: Oh my God I'm laughing! happy relationship (you have been with so many guys), beautiful apartment (so what), brand new car (me too), high pay job (I earn more)....say plenty more... I have 5 guys at the moment! haha.

I voted that they should be disaplined for bringing bad publicity to the firm, but I understand why they were sacked. Work email is not a personal IM system, it's for work use. They must have known the rules when they applied for the job. Plus, I'd be deeply ashamed to have such immature people working for me if I were the boss.

I don't think they should have been fired unless this was an ongoing feud between the girls, and it seems like it was because Katrina got smarmy right after Melinda replied and they got personal at the end. It's definately unprofessional.

Sorry to say...that was an entertaining read.

If I were their boss, I would bring both of them in my office with the printout and tell them both:

"GET A LIFE! But do it elsewhere!" And fire them both. There is no reason for such cattiness in a workplace.

Oh heck, maybe they just need to grow up

um lol. I would so fire them.

If they have not had any other issues with work i think a disiplinary action would have been sufficent

we're told every year, that our work email is not personal or private. i'm sure they were told the same - they just made a bad choice. & hey, does anyone else think they sound like middle-school/teenage kids rather than responsible adults?

If I were their boss I would have had a good laugh.

Geez. Are they both, like, 16 years old?

I haven't seen an exchange like that since my high school days! OhmiGawd!

I think they should have been fired. Yea its harsh, but a law office of all places is NOT the place for those antics...maybe not if it had only been one or 2 responses....

I'm sorry, this isn't answering the poll, but thank you I had the best laught reading this. They both sound rather silly

They shouldn't have been fired - they should have been demoted back to kindergarten.

I saw a thread about this on another forum. Interesting that no one said they should be fired. Suggestions included going on Springer to mud wrestling with the proceeds going to Katrina victims!

If her job is so high paying why does she need to be reimbursed for 2 slices of bread, some cheese and a piece of ham???? I personally wouldn't have has time to request something like this at my job?

What a petty thing to be fired over. I wonder why they didn't sack the person who forwarded the exchange to people outisde the office?

Sadly, this looks like the regular goings-on at my former office. "Cattiness" was the order of the whole place. Even the supervisors and their boss got in on it. No one was ever fired or even disciplined for it....
And some people still wonder why I transferred to another office....

Foolish foolish girls -- and a lesson to us all about the lack of privacy in emails.

i think perhaps they did it, unknowingly? look "Ms Nugent sent a group email" when the next person hit reply, it probably went to the whole group, & so on... just another indication they are too stupid to work there!

Apparently, from what I hear, there were many people who sent the email because of its obvious funny content but many of them were the lawyers and sacking a whole bunch of them would impact on the firm, badly.

What a couple of maroons, as Bugs would say. But I think firing was a bit harsh, unless this was just the straw that broke the camel's back, as was likely the case. (I can't tell for sure; the link doesn't work anymore.) If, however, they were fired because of the publicity—well, that's rather stupid, isn't it, since they probably weren't the ones who forwarded it outside the company in the first place? If they were fired because of the publicity, chances are they (as secretaries) were the fall guys. The company would not want to lose lawyers over this.

Still, entertaining exchange.
