My new kitten got into my other cats food and has had diarrhea for a week now. Well, really it is just soft poo and he only goes once or twice a day. So it is not out of control. I have been making sure that he only gets his kitten food but the loose stool doesn't seem to be getting better. I've read that boiled chicken and rice may do the trick. Or yogurt. Can I can get some specifics on these remedies please? If anyone has used these solutions and had them work or not work I would love to hear some advice as to how much and when etc. Thanks! I would love to clear this up because he keeps stepping it in and its gross!

Oh! How I understand you! I've had to deal with both my kittens' diarrhea problem for weeks!
What I would suggest is white rice and some kind of protein. Usually, it's chicken or ground beef (lean). The proportions are 1/3 protein for 2/3 feculent (rice). After awhile I got tired of all that cooking, so I replaced the rice with Rice cereals for baby (Pablum?) and the meat with chicken baby-food. Just make sure it's only chicken...no veggies.
As for the yogourt, I think you might want to wait before giving the kitty that. It's dairy...and so not good right now.

i tried the yogurt with Java, & it didn't work that well. i got some gel at the pet store that was beneficial bacteria (same kind of stuff in yogurt, acidolphilus, etc) & it worked great! it came in a 4 dose packet, but she only needed 2 doses, soe i've got some if one of them has the problem again. i should say, however, that Java first got antibiotics, because of a bacterial (bad kind) overgrowth. i didn't use the other stuff till the infection was gone.

Whenever our cats/kittens in foster care have a problem with diarrhea we tempoarily feed them Purina One Kitten, which contains yogurt, and usually does the trick.

First and foremost, be sure this kitten is free of any parasites...have a stool check done. Once any treatment is over, consider using a product called Benebac or Probiacin (?spelling)..both are a paste, they are similar products - a paste containing mutliple strains of acidophilus which can recolonize the gut with "good" bacteria...useful after antibiotic treatments or an illness.

Plain, active culture, unflavored yoghurt is another way of doing what they do, but the paste may be easier to administer, as not all cats like yoghurt.

Question to add to this, which may be a stupid question, but I'll take my chances! Do you mix the pablum with the chicken baby food? Is the above mentioned 'paste' good for kittens of any age? My kitten has had diarrhea for since approx. Saturday, and she goes quite a lot. ANy suggestion would be helpful!

I can comment on the paste
it can even be used on newborns, and had doseage recomendations based on age/weight as I recall. I used to keep this on hand, but haven't needed it in so long, I quit doing so.

I talked to my vet and she suggested that I give him Hill's Prescription diet I/D wet for a few days and see if the diarrhea clears up. The food is for gastrointestinal problems and is easy on the gut. I will post with results.
