That about shooting my husband was really cruel. He realizes how much I love my cats just had a bad reaction to it. She will only eat one kind of food and that is any kind of meow mix. nothing else. We did have her on atibiotics but she had a bad reaction to it so I just went ahead agreed to the surgery. I think I did the right thing and I would have done it no matter what.
Thanks for the support.

^I don't think that KitEKats4Eva meant it cruelly 2BadKitties. I think they were just offering a little light relief and trying to offer support in a joking way. It was an extremely mean thing for him to say about your beloved cat however flippantly said, but i think KitEKats4Eva was just trying to support you when you are feeling a little let down. Thats all..

I hope your cat is well soon though. Mine is poorly at the moment so i feel for you. Its horrible, but certainly 200 quids worth of treatment should get them back on the straight and narrow! Hope it all works out for you.

you vet should have prescribed a special diet since the cat had stones. more then likely Hill's feline c/d or some uriniary tract diet. and the cat should remian on the diet for life. (that is at least what the vets at my work suggest)

you may want to concider switching vets if you are uncomfortable with this current vet.

all vets licenced to practice medicine must pass a state board and have a licence number. they must also graduate from an accredited veterinary school.

My vet? Absolutely, I can trust him. He's proven that to me time and time again. I drive way out of my way to see this vet, because he's good and I know it. There's another vet, she's practically in my back yard. But I wouldn't use her for ANYTHING. Nothing at all. Because she's a quack and does'nt know what she's doing. Animals have died at her clinic and under her care for no apparent reason, and I won't set foot in the door. I've heard so much outlandish stuff that people tell me thier vets have told them. I can't say much about it to them, but it amazes me the things I hear. Makes me glad I have a vet that cares about animals, and does his best to help them.

Did your vet test your cat's urine? I know when I took my dog in for peeing on the floor, the first thing he did was test her urine. And although it LOOKED fine, it tested positive for blood. So he started her on Baytrill, and said if she wasn't showing some improvement in 3-4 days, to bring her back. Well, by 3 days, she was worse, so I brought her back, we did a urine culture and urinalysis, and of course, by the time those results were in, she was better! Her infection was just kinda stubborn. But I can't imagine a vet saying it doesn't "feel" like a UTI, then giving you meds for a UTI. I'm not sure about cats, but in dogs, usually decent sized bladder stones CAN be felt if you know what you're looking for. But your vet basically said "I don't think it's a UTI, but we'll give her meds for a UTI." That makes no sense to me.

Only *you* can decide if your vet is trustworthy or shady. Go with your gut feeling. A good vet will make you and your pet very comfortable. I do want to offer one piece of defense for the vet in question here regarding the Amoxil...has anyone here ever gone to the doctor with a persistant cold or something and have the Dr give you an antibiotic? Very rarely do they biopsy you or wait for full blood gas results to determine specific infection before prescribing the antibiotic. Why? You can usually correct the infection and soothe symptoms before these longer costlier tests are returned. The biggest risk here is antibiotic resistance, and unless your vet is giving you Amoxil several times per year, you needn't worry about this. In general, broad spectrum antibiotics are a GOOD idea if infection of any bacterial origin is suspected. Amoxil is not specific for UTI, but the e coli commonly responsible for UTIs (in animals AND humans) often responds to amoxil. As do many other common bacterial infections. It is sad that your kitty did not react well to the pills, but I disagree with everyone who thinks the prescription of an antibiotic to an animal purported by its owner to be non specifically ill is wrong or shady or irresponsible.
(and if anyone thinks im blowing this out of nowhere, please note I have a biomedical degree with a good pharmacological background)

Off Topic --- I hope to goodness the doc doesn't hand out antbiotics for a cold! Even I know that's not going to do a lick of good and I'd look askance at a dr. who suggested it (unless a secondary bacterial infection was suspected of course.)

I think what your husband said was cold and insensitive. You did the right thing!!

As far as trusting vets, Yes you can. If you aren't happy with that one, go to another until you find the right one for you and your cat.

I agree. My doctor won't prescribe antibiotics unless they are absolutely necessary. IMHO too many doctors are just carelessly passing out antibiotics, people do not take them properly (not finishing the prescription) and the bugs are getting stronger. Irresponsible - I think so.

So glad she is doing well and most likely she will need to be on prescription food all her life. When she goes in for a follow up ask them!

You did a great thing
and you nevermind your husband - he overstepped his boundries
