Because some pictures are quite big here in Fur pages, could you all please make sure that they stay within a reasonable size as some of them take up the whole of the computer screen, and it's not only taking a strain on the server, but it makes it more difficult for the members who are on dial up

This is the size that they should be........

Do check out this thread for a new discovery that RoseHawke shared today: clickable thumbnails.

Don't know if a similar feature is available with photo hosting sites other than photobucket, but this is dead easy to use, and should really help in the picture size department!

Note that if it's download time/bandwidth you're worried about, the dimensions of the photo image aren't really the important factor.

What you want to limit is the size of the file, not the dimensions of the image.

Using compression (e.g. JPEGs), it's quite easy to get large photos that don't have a large filesize, and hence are easy to download quickly.

Photoshop has an option called "Save for Web" which lets you determine the optimal level of JPEG compression for a good tradeoff between photo quality and file size.

That's part of it, Mike. The other thing, though, is when a pic is visually large, it often means that, to see it all, one has to scroll not only vertically but horizontally as well, which at best is annoying. That's why the allowable width is 640 pixels -- so that the pic stays within the available screen real estate.
