Is The International Kennel Club a good place to buy a kitten?

Looking at the site, I would say that no, you should stay away from people selling kittens only registered with these people as the pedigree is probably a poor one. If the kittens had the background to be registered with TICA or CFA or ACFA, they would be.

From what I understand on their site, they aren't just a registry they also pick out the animal for you. That's a broker, plain and simple, they are getting these animals at a lower cost and charging you a finders fee for the same cats you could have found yourself. Any place that has cupons, financing and the like is out for one thing, $$$, and could care less if you end up with a poor quality, sick animal. It appears to be the equivalent of adopting from Petland. Please don't use them, if you tell me what breed interests you and your state, I will look up the e-mails of all the local breeders I can find and you can deal with the breeder directly. Any breeder selling to this place doesn't even care who their babies go to.

Thanks for all the help. I won't my buy kitten from there. I got a question though, where do you guys find breeders anyway? I found some on the CFA site but that was it. Are those guys at the CFA site reliable?

CFA is a very high profile registry. They allow their breeders to have advertisements on their site, but it's not the same as finding you a kitten and charging you for it.

Also try www.tica.org they have the complete e-mails/websites of many of their breeders. Again, it isn't a referral service, these are just TICA registered catteries.

Either of these places should send you to a decent breeder. If you adopt a kitten locally, make sure to go see its living conditions first and to get a contract with a health guarantee (every good breeder will provide one). you can also go to Google or Yahoo and type in your desired breed + cattery and website should come up that way as well.

What breed are you interested in? CFA and TICA are good places to find breeders. But you do have to make sure you ask lots of questions! there can be bad breeders even with in the registries.

Another great place to find breeders in the Fanciers Breeder Referral List at http://www.breedlist.com/

The International Kennel Club is a pet shop with a cleverly disguised name. They have a store on Long Island. They are not a good place to get a quality kitten.

Good for you for asking questions before making a decision!

This is the BREEDERS FORUM - if people want a pedigreed cat, this is where to look. Go to other forums for mixed-breed cats.

Remember, also, that there are many bad OWNERS and expect the breeders to question you thoroughly and ask for references. Just because a person comes to me and asks for a kitten doesn't mean he stands a chance of getting one unless he jumps through the proper hoops.
