Hi - My adopted stray cat gave birth about 2 weeks ago - all seems to be well with the kittens, they are healthy, sleeping eating and starting to explore.

The problem is that new mama has started meowing all the time - she woke me up at 6:30 by meowing a lot, and does it throughout the day too. I feel so bad for her she is trying to tell me something but i don't know what! I am helping her out with the feedings by feeding the kittens goat milk a couple of times a day, as she is very small and dainty, and she has had a litter of 5.

I have also put out a variety of foods for her next to the kitten area, along with milk and water for her - I can't figure out what else could be the matter.

When she comes up to my room, she seems to be looking for another nesting area, but otherwise she seems happy for them where they are.

The only other thing I can think of is that her nipples may be hurting or cracked? The kittens are quite big now.

Oh and the other thing I guess is that she may be on heat? Is it not a little early? There doesn't seem to be any other signs of it though... I am keeping her indoors unless I go out and sit out with her for the moment, until I can get her spayed (which will be when the kittens are weaned..?)

Sorry for the long post - but Im baffled (and worried)!!

She may indeed be going back into heat...at this point, it may make sense to keep her indoors at all times until she can be spayed.

But she meows at *me* all the time, and comes to find me and meow at me - its as if shes trying to tell me something!

And shes still nursing, and she doesn't show any of the other symptoms.

But yes I will keep her inside unless I am with her, she generally just likes to sit around outside and sniff around things.

I dont know where you've got her and her babies situated, but it could be as simple as she wants to be closer to you, I had a momma that was like that, a big baby. Also I've read that after the kittens become more active, the mother may choose to move them...does she have that option? Keep her indoors anyway, just to be safe.

Hmm....this is where a cat translator would really come in handy. My foster mom talked to me every time I went in to see her, but I do believe she was just looking for some attention since the kittens were getting so much.

She might just want to show them off to you!! I personally wouldn't even let her out if you are with her - if something spooks her she might be off, and not only could she come back pregnant, she could come back injured and you might have to be 'mum'.
